Nada Sabet, Egyptian director created this show inspired by Wolfgang Stange with members of UK AMICI Dance and Theatre Company, http://www.amicidance.org/ who ran a workshop organised by the British Council Egypt in partnership with the Right To Live Association in Cairo http://www.towardshumanity.org/towards/rightof.html

The show, which integrates able-bodied and disabled artists and performers with some knowledge of dance and aided by the power of improvisation, is a result of a 40-hour workshop, during which each participant was asked to create a story of their choice. Some are real and some are fiction, others are dreams, while some a jumble of emotions. The stories were then made into pictures and the pictures matured into scenes. Each participant created their character and its story, which at a later stage were combined into a coherent piece.

Following the show, there will be a question and answer session to discuss with the actors issues around disability and social inclusion.

Seminars on UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

UK speakers Bob Price and Peter Coleridge with Heba Hagras from Egypt have been invited to be our keynote speakers at two seminars celebrating Egypt’s signing and ratifying of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

Seminars will be on 30 November in Alexandria and 3 December in Cairo to address the UN convention for the Rights of People with disability, its implications for the approach to disability in general and to employment opportunities in particular.

Topics presented:

Employment opportunities for people with disability: The UK experience by Dr. Bob Price, UK
Overview on the UN Convention for the Right of People with Disability and Egypt’s Signing and Ratification by Ms Heba Hagras
Community Based Rehabilitation and the UN convention for the rights of People of Disability by Mr Peter Coleridge, UK

“The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities received its 20th ratification on 3 April 2008, triggering the entry into force of the Convention and its Optional Protocol 30 days later. This marks a major milestone in the effort to promote, protect and ensure the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms of persons with disabilities and to promote respect for their inherent dignity”
