Title/ Subject Area: Capacity Building to Address Climate Change in Bangladesh and Ghana with Special Reference to Conservation of Saline and Drought Tolerant Species
Summary/ Aim: To position Bangladesh and Ghana to be able to reduce the impact of climate change. This will be achieved through developing HEI training in important areas of climate change, conducting research on utilization of coastal saline waters and community based cage culture; exploring saline and drought tolerant species.

Title/ Subject Area: The role of social enterprise in capacity building for business and enterprise
Summary/ Aim: The Royal University of Phnom Penh Development Studies Programme will build on pre-existing relationships with NGOs and the civil service together with newly formed alliances in the social enterprise sector to emerge as a ‘national centre of excellence’ in the tuition and promotion of social enterprise which feeds into market orientated approaches towards sustainable service delivery.

Democratic Republic of Congo

Title/ Subject Area: Science Training Laboratory using New Information and Communication Technologies
Summary/ Aim: DR Congo has a wide diversity of natural resources but currently has very poorly equipped laboratories in which to analyse these products. Training in ICT has great potential as it enables limited experiments to be carried out and then complimented using ICT computer simulated experiments which reduces the costs while extending knowledge to a larger number of people.

It also creates employment and livelihood opportunities to citizens of the country.

Title/ Subject Area: Optimisation of Pesticidal Plants for the Control of Insect Pests in Stored Maize and Vegetables
Summary/ Aim: The project intends to cultivate practical development tools from farmers’ indigenous knowledge of pesticidal plants by optimising their use and ultimately providing effective and environmentally benign alternatives to costly synthetic pesticides. This will increase profits and the reliability of harvest for poor farmers and address directly MDG1.

Title/ Subject Area: Managing positive social change through product development and capacity building: a pilot study to test pop-up tents as a solution to malaria prevention
Summary/ Aim: The project aims are – 1) to design and product engineer a cheap, lightweight, safe, flexible pop up frame and long lasting insecticide treated net (LLIN) for internal somestic use against malaria and 2) explore ways in which a successful design can be manufactured locally in Nigeria and lead to job creation.

Summary/ Aim: The project is designed to improve on the productivity of the local West African Dwarf (WAD) goat through cross breeding and the development of a sustainable and improved husbandry practices on improving the socio-economic condition of resource poor farmers. It is anticipated that the project will develop improved goat breeding and rearing systems including management of feeding, reproduction, kid rearing, growth, milk yield and control of diseases and parasites.

Summary/ Aim: The aim is to build capacity in Integrated Water Resource Management  (IWRM) by enhancing curriculum and teaching in climate change and IWRM. Graduates will have improved theoretical and practical knowledge on how to apply IWRM concepts in the management of water resources.

Zimbabwe

Title/ Subject Area: Strengthening environmental education through revision of current courses, use of decision support systems and field experimentation at a university in Zimbabwe
Summary/ Aim: The partnership will see MSU sending its lecturers to SUA to train at Mphil level so that they are well equipped to deal with the effects of the land reform programme.  The trained undergraduate students at the Midlands State University will join the extension agents (AGRITEX, Environmental Management Agency (EMA), ZINWA etc.) when they complete and impart knowledge learnt from the project to the farmers.  

Zimbabwe
