Programme background
The aim of the DelPHE programme is to support partnerships between higher education institutions across the world to contribute to the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. These Goals aim to:

• Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
• Achieve universal primary education
• Promote gender equality and empower women
• Reduce child mortality
• Improve maternal health
• Combat HIV/AIDS
• Ensure environmental sustainability
• Develop a global partnership for Development

Since the programme was launched in 2006, some 200 projects have been funded in the following countries:

Africa: Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe

Asia: Afghanistan, Bangladesh. Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Pakistan, Vietnam and Yemen.

Overview of DelPHE project achievements
Our publication 'Celebrating DelPHE success 2009' (pdf) looks at the programme's direct impact on communities and universities where the projects work. Since DelPHE started in 2006 there have been many significant achievements with projects covering a wide range of themes. These include maternal and child health provision, civil engineering, climate change, gender equality, peace building, disaster risk management, fisheries, water and sanitation. Partners typically work with a wide variety of stakeholders at institutional, community and policy levels.
