Global English for Europe - GLEE

The UK and the British Council continue to be centres of excellence in ELT. They generate innovative ideas and materials. We would like to make these available to as many policy makers, teachers and learners as possible, whilst at the same time listening and responding to the needs of ELT communities.

Global English for Europe wishes to build on the success of past projects by bringing new ideas and innovative materials to the region through our engagement with valued local partners and ELT communities.

What Is GLEE?

GLEE delivers quality teacher development courses, learning materials and research data to policy makers, teacher educators, teachers and learners.

For teachers:

Learning Technologies in Lithuania

In Lithuania the British Council worked in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Science, Vilnius Pedagogical University and Mykolas Romeris University to deliver the Learning Technologies for the Classroom Course. A team of master trainers delivered workshops to a large number  of teachers who are now much more able to use wikis, blogs , social networking sites, and other learning technologies when teaching their students.

“I started using internet for teaching after the seminar organized by the British Council in spring 2010. During the summer I have improved internet using skills and at the beginning of this school year I invited my students to be active visitors of a blog  (internet diary) and interactive Web wiki”, says Astra Daugeliene, the third prize winner of the Go Digital competition.

For Learners:

In 2008 we signed an agreement with Diena Media Ltd. for 36 Learn English inserts. Diena Media is the biggest in Lithuania regional media group owning three dailies in three largest towns in Lithuania: the Vilniaus Diena in Vilnius, the Kauno Diena in Kaunas and the Klaipeda in Klaipeda. The Vilnius Diena published LearnEnglish pages in Saturday issues. We started with Learn English Family pages in September which is the first month of the new school year and there is a renewed parents’ interest in their children’s learning. Also, we used the European Languages Day campaigns as a context for launching our project. See the Vilnius Diena article here. For Policy Makers:

How Is This Achieved?

To deliver these courses and materials GLEE works in partnership with ministries, local education authorities, teacher training colleges, university language faculties, networks of professionals such as teachers’ associations and the media, such as internet portals and newspapers and magazines.

To support teacher development we supply courses to partners who provide the infrastructure for the training. We also train trainers for those courses.

To support learners we place materials directly in newspapers, magazines, on websites and as mobile phone applications.

We deliver research data directly to policy makers.

A large proportion of our courses and materials are also delivered to teachers and learners directly online.
