HMC Projects in Central and Eastern Europe
HMC Projects in Central and Eastern Europe were established in 1993 as a student scholarship scheme to give opportunities to boys and girls aged 16-17 from the former communist countries of Central and Eastern Europe to spend one year in an independent boarding school in the UK. The aim is to enable them to improve their English and to experience the culture of Great Britain, and so foster bonds of friendship and mutual understanding between young people across Europe. A similar training and work experience scheme for teachers was started in 1996.
Student Scholarship Scheme Each year HMC Projects in Central and Eastern Europe selects academically gifted students from several former communist countries to spend a year in some of the most prestigious British boarding schools with all fees for tuition and accommodation met by the schools. Scholars embark on GCE Advanced Level, International Baccalaureate or Scottish Higher courses and draw lasting benefit from different approaches to study and from the many extra-curricular opportunities open to them.
Eligibility Applications are invited from students aged between 16 and 17 years 6 months on 1st September with high standards of academic and other achievements and with a high level of English proficiency. Selection is based on entry tests, academic record and school references and on performance at interview, where selectors will seek evidence of the ability to adapt to new surroundings and to participate actively in school life.
Conditions Successful students will be awarded a free scholarship, worth up to £30,000, and allocated a place in a British boarding school. The scholarship scheme is open only to students whose parents’ combined gross annual income does not exceed £25,000. The parents of students selected for scholarships pay a fee of £1,250 to HMC Projects.
Teachers’ Training and Work Experience Scheme Teachers are also selected to participate in a training and work experience scheme for one year in these schools. They will gain experience of the British educational system and of the British way of life and will improve their command of English. They will have a programme of lesson observation and teaching, assistance with pastoral duties and responsibilities in a boarding house, and involvement in sport or other extra-curricular activities.
Eligibility Applications are invited from teachers who have a degree and a teaching qualification. Teachers are expected to have some experience of teaching or teaching practice and a good knowledge of English and to be competent to teach in one or two subject areas.
Conditions Successful teachers will be provided with accommodation and meals free of charge during term-time and will be paid the national minimum wage. Teachers pay a fixed sum to HMC Projects to cover administration costs.
Application Procedure Details of the application procedure can be found on the website: http://www.hmc.org.uk/projects. Applications are made through national agents or representatives, who will make arrangements for shortlisted candidates to be interviewed in their own country in January by a member of HMC Projects Working Group.
