1st regional heat of FameLab

The first regional heat of FameLab will take place on Saturday 2 March 2013 at Batova Vila in Zlin. Come to see the show – you will find out that science could be fun! Reservations at sekretariat@batova-vila.cz.

What is FameLab:  

FameLab is a national talent competition to find the best new talent in science communication.

Originally created by the UK’s Cheltenham Science Festival, the idea of the competition is to take science out of the classroom and make it fun, and to encourage young people with a passion for science and technology to share their enthusiasm with the general public.

Who can take part in Famelab

To enter FameLab you must be at least 21 years old, working in or studying science, technology, engineering or maths and working or studying in the Czech Republic.

This includes private and public sector employees. The competition aims to provide new opportunities for engineers and scientists to develop their skills as communicators.

What will happen at the competition?

• You will be given a maximum of 3 minutes in which to impress the judges. They are looking for exciting and engaging talks (in Czech) that can be understood by a general public adult audience. Minimal props are allowed but there is no set up time or assistance. Power points’ presentations are not permitted.
• The judges will be able to question you after each presentation and will also give you constructive feedback where possible. The panel will include 3-4 people, experts on science and communication.
• The judges will be able to question you on the topic and give feedback. An audience will be present who will be involved in the selection process.
• A public audience will be present.
• Ten finalists from the auditions will be chosen to go through to a masterclass and then to the final. The masterclass will be a 2-day event led by the British and Czech science and communication experts.
• At the final (in May) you will be asked to give another 3 minute presentation of a contemporary science topic that is different from previous auditions.
• FameLab International competition will take place in June 2013 in Cheltenham. The finalists will present in English.
