IELTS Preparation - Frequently Asked Questions
What is IELTS?

The IELTS is an internationally recognised test of English, taken mainly by those wishing to study overseas who need to prove their English level. IELTS tests your English skills in 4 modules: - Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing, and is scored for each module out of 9 "bands" ranging from beginner to proficiency level. The test consists of four modules: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. All candidates take the same Listening and Speaking Modules. There is a choice of Reading and Writing Modules (Academic & General Training). The Academic format is for entry to higher and further education, and the General Training format is for entry to secondary education, work experience or training programs. The IELTS website provides full information about the test - www.IELTS.org

Why do I need an IELTS preparation course?
Your IELTS score provides internationally recognised proof of your English level, and is therefore your key to entry onto academic courses, study or work opportunities. An IELTS preparation course will provide you with a full understanding of how the test works and practice in all test areas, to ensure that you obtain the best possible score.
What will I learn on an IELTS preparation course?
The course is designed to familiarise you with the IELTS, and the way it works, and to provide you with plenty of practice in each module. The course will familiarise you with the test format and time restrictions, and techniques that will help improve your score. You will learn specific skills through analysis of the type of questions you will face on the exam day. You will gain an understanding of examiner expectations and will practice answering.
What is the minimum English level I need to be accepted onto an IELTS course?
It is important that students already have a good level of English – while the IELTS course will improve your English, the main focus is on improving your test-taking skills. We will ask you to take a placement test to check your English level as part of the registration process.
Can you explain what the IELTS Band Scores mean?
All candidates who complete the test receive a report on their English language ability, which places them on a 9 – band scale. (Band: 9 – Expert User, 8 – Very Good User, 7 – Good User, 6 – Competent User, 5 – Modest User, 4 – Limited User, 3 – Extremely limited user, 2 – Intermittent user, 1 – Non user).
What band score do I need to study at an overseas university?
This depends on the university or institution you are applying to – and there may be specific entry requirements according to the department or faculty. If you know which institution you are applying for see http://bandscore.ielts.org/ for detailed information.
I have just passed FCE, and I need to get IELTS 6.5 to enter university this summer. Can I take an IELTS course now?
Yes – a pass at FCE is equivalent to B2, and so you meet the entry level onto the IELTS course. Bear in mind that IELTS 6.5 is a higher level than FCE so you will need to continue to improve your English level as you take the IELTS course.
Who are the IELTS course teachers?
Our IELTS teachers are all highly qualified teachers with experience in teaching IELTS courses.
How many people are there in each class?
The maximum class size is 13.
If I don't achieve my required band score, how soon can I re-take the test?
There is no limit on sitting the test. However, British Council recommends you work to improve your English before taking the test again.
