Northern Irish film showcase

26 -30 September, Cinema Aero, Prague

We present a unique collection of Northern Irish films to Czech audiences as part of its one-year programme Focus on Northern Ireland. The Northern Irish Film Showcase will take place 26 – 30 September in the Prague art Cinema Aero.

The collection was put together and will be presented in Prague by Michael Besnard-Scott, The Belfast Film Festival Programmer. „The showcase is a celebration of film-making coming from a small nation which spans documentary, features, shorts, animation as well as installation work. Many of the films I have selected are films that have stayed with me for many years, however there are also many newer films that on first viewing were a revelation,“ says Michael about his choice. The Spence Brothers Retrospective – brothers Noel and Roy Spence are mavericks of cinema production, architecture and collectors of memorabilia. As part of this retrospective there will be a chance to view films such as: Testament of Caleb Meek, Wolves of Darkness, Beast of Druid Hills, The Magic Man, The Drumlin, Phase 1 and Keep Watching the Skies. The brothers own a Tudor Cinema in all of its 50’s Art Deco splendour along with the Excelsior Cinema and are situated outside Comber. The documentary The Spence Brothers– Movie Mavericks was screened at Cannes Film Festival 2006 and takes a tour of the ornate cinemas, the brothers´ films and their fascinating creative world: a creativity that has spawned true Northern Ireland versions of Frankenstein’s monster, the blob, werewolves, aliens and even leprechauns! There will be approximately 20 films covering the genres of Gothic, Drama and Sci-Fi.
