It gives us great pleasure to invite you to another international Café Scientifique organised by the British Council, Cambridge University and Natural History Museum Rijeka.
It has been 150 years since Darwin made one of the most significant breakthroughs in scientific history - the theory of natural selection. But if it hadn't been for a young ornithologist on the other side of the world, his work might never have appeared.
Dr Paul White is going to give us interesting details of the relationship between Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace explaining how Darwin won the evolution race. Dr White is an editor of the Correspondence of Charles Darwin and teaches at the Department of History and Philosophy of Science, University of Cambridge.
Join us in this hi-tech discussion by video conference from our office in Zagreb, with audience at the Croatian House of Culture Sušak in Rijeka and Boštjan Surina as the moderator from the Rijeka Natural History Museum, UK presenter Paul White and Helen Scales as the facilitator from Cambridge. The facilitator at Zagreb venue will be Damjan Franjević from the Biology department of the Faculty of Science.
When: Thursday 19 November 2009, 7.30 p.m.
Where: British Council, Ilica 12, Zagreb
Admission Free
Café Scientifique provides a unique forum for the discussion of topical and thought-provoking scientific issues in a way that is much more relaxed, informal and accessible than a public lecture. No scientific background is necessary – just an interest in the topic for discussion.
This presentation is a part of the British Council’s Darwin Now programme which provides the global opportunity to explore questions about the origin, nature and distribution of life; and inspire debate about science, religion and society. It is an integrated series of events; including the Darwin Now exhibition that opened in April 2009 in Zagreb and is currently on tour in Croatia.
The number of participants is limited so please reserve your place at projects@britishcouncil.hr or call 01/4899 523.
If you are from Rijeka and want to participate write to info@prirodoslovni.com or call 051/553669. The discussion will be held in English.
