JK Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix has won the fiction prize at the annual WH Smith People’s Choice Book Awards. The epic adventure took the award ahead of novels from Ian Rankin, James Herbert, Mark Haddon and Colum McCann.
. Orange Prize longlist announced Monica Ali and Margaret Atwood lead the longlist for the 2004 Orange Prize for Fiction. On the list are ten British authors, six from the US, a Canadian, two Indians and a South African.

The winner of the Man Booker Prize for Fiction 2003 was Vernon God Little by DBC Pierre. The result was announced at an awards ceremony held at the British Museum on 14th October 2003.
.Whitbread Book Awards The prize highlights some of the many well-written, enjoyable British books published during the past year. The Whitbread has five categories – First Novel, Novel, Biography, Poetry and Children’s Book. For each category there are three judges – generally an author, a bookseller and a journalist. They select a shortlist of four books, which includes the winner. Their criteria is to select well-written, enjoyable books that they would strongly recommend anyone to read.
Mark Haddon won the 2003 Whitbread Book of the Year Award for The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. The announcement was made by Sir John Banham, Chairman of Whitbread PLC, on Tuesday 27 January at an awards ceremony at The Brewery in Central London.
