Teaching Knowledge Test

TKT tests knowledge about teaching of English to speakers of other languages and concentrates on the knowledge needed by all English teachers. TKT aims to increase teachers' confidence and enhance job prospects by focusing on the core teaching knowledge needed by teachers of primary, secondary or adult learners. TKT is suitable for new or inexperienced teachers, for those who are retraining to teach or for those who want to refresh their teaching knowledge.

This flexible and accesible award will help you to understand:

  • different methodologies for teaching
  • the 'language of teaching'
  • the way in which resources can be used
  • the key aspects of lesson planning
  • classroom management methods for different needs

The test

TKT has five modules:

MODULE 1 - Language and background to language learning and teaching

MODULE 2 - Planning lessons and use of resources for language teaching

MODULE 3 - Managing the teaching and learning process

MODULE 4 - TKT: KAL (Knowledge About Language)

MODULE 5 - TKT: CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning)

Each module contains 80 questions and lasts for 80 minutes. For more information on the test please visit

Grading and results
Each module is free-standing and there is no aggregate score. Candidates receive a certificate for each module taken. The maximum mark for each module is 80. Scores are converted to percentages and performance is reported on a 4-band scale.

Band 4 = at least around 85% of available marks
Band 3 = at least around 50% of available marks
Band 2 = at least around 20% of available marks
Band 1 = less than 20% of available marks

Results will be dispatched from Cambridge around 2 weeks after the test. Guidance on the interpretation of results is subject to ongoing research and will be issued in future.

Registration
The modules can be taken at the same time or separately in any order.There are two exam sessions – in May and November. Entries must be submitted at least 6 weeks in advance. The dates are:
