Frequently asked questions
Can a youth exchange be a school exchange?
No. A youth exchange must be non-formal learning and the idea of the exchange must have come from a group of young people who have already come together, not chosen by the teachers.
I want to go to another country by myself, will you provide funding for my trip?
Connect Youth allots funds to help with youth group exchanges, not individuals. If you are interested in long-term volunteer work, please take a look at the European Voluntary Service.
I’ve been offered a chance to go to a youth summit in another European country. Will you cover my travel costs?
Unless you are planning to go with a youth group, and are meeting with another youth group there under the criteria of a Youth Exchange, then Connect Youth can not provide funding for your travels.
Why do I need to include another Youth in Action Programme country if our group wants to have an exchange with a “partner country”?
The European Commission has rules regarding which countries can receive funding for an exchange. By having two European YOUTH Programme nations participate in a third country exchange, it ensures that there will be a European dimension to the project.
Can British Council Connect Youth get me a job in the UK?
Unfortunately, Connect Youth does not aid people in obtaining work visas or work placements for the UK.
Does British Council Connect Youth provide scholarships or grants to foreign students wishing to study in the UK?
Connect Youth is not able to assist in funding study places or scholarships in British universities or colleges, and neither can it recommend suitable institutions. We suggest you contact your own State Education Committee or the British Council office in your country for more information.
Where can I get an application form?
All of the application forms, guidelines, user’s guide and many reports can be found here.
Why do I need to apply through a European Voluntary Service (EVS) sending organisation?
The Sending Organisation is responsible for preparing a young person to be a volunteer, as well as working with the Host Organisation to ensure that the volunteer’s placement is successful.
I have some time in the summer, and I’d like to spend it volunteering. How would I go about this?
While there are some short-term European Voluntary Service placements that take place between 3 weeks and 6 months, these projects are reserved for youths of lesser opportunity. If you think that you may be eligible, please contact us.
Our youth group is going to have an exchange next month. We’ve chosen our partner, and all the travel arrangements have been made, but we’re short on funds. Will Connect Youth give us a grant?
You must apply for a grant by the deadlines that are regulated by the European Commission. We are unable to fund exchanges that are organised outside of the European Youth in Action programme.
What is the age limit for youth exchanges?
Young people must be between 13-25 years old on the day your exchange starts Under exceptional circumstances -severely physically disabled or socially marginalised- we might make exceptions for those 26 to 30 years old.
Does a bilateral exchange have to take place in one of the two participating countries?
Yes, you can not, for example, meet your German partners in Italy unless you are prepared to do a trilateral exchange and find an Italian partner.
If we do an exchange overseas do we subsequently have to host our partners in the UK?
An exchange does not need to be reciprocal, but we recommend it.
Do we have to re-apply for the second leg of the exchange?
Yes, we require a separate application for both sending and hosting exchanges.
Are we automatically guaranteed funding for the second leg of our exchange?
No. You still need to apply in the normal way and with the help of some external assessors we will make a decision. It is also dependent on the funds avaiilable.
