Students from schools and colleges across England gathered at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London on 22 November 2012 to participate in a mock meeting of the Council of the European Union.
The Mock Council gives students a taste of what international politics is like, by simulating a real meeting of the Council of the European Union. Representing either an EU member state, the European Commission or the General Secretariat, the participating students discussed and debated two topics:
The meeting also included interpreting booths, giving students the chance to give part of their talks in French, German or Spanish.
Why not set up your own Mock Council meeting at your school, college or youth group?
Organising your own Mock Council is a great way to engage young people in the workings of the European Union and gives them a chance to participate in lively debate about issues concerning the EU and European citizenship.
Your Mock Council meeting should include representatives of the EU member states, the European Commission and the General Secretariat. Participants should research two topics leading up to the event, which they will then defend at the meeting from the position of the state they are representing.
