University of Cambridge In-service Certificate in English Language Teaching (ICELT)

WHAT IS ICELT?

ICELT Is the In-service Certificate in English Language Teaching. It is an internationally recognized qualification issued by the University of Cambridge. It is ideal if you are already teaching English and wish to deepen your knowledge and develop your skills to improve your teaching.

When is the course?

What do I need to take part in the course?

You will need to be a practising teacher with at least 100 hours of experience at the beginning of the course. Your level of English must be at least B2 (Common European Framework).

What does the course involve?

ICELT is a part-time course which runs form August to May (a school year). It gives you an insight into the principles of effective teaching and a range of practical skills for teaching English. You will have the opportunity to observe other teachers in action and reflect on your own teaching.

You are required to complete:

80 academic hours face-to-face at the British Council, including input, workshops, tutorial support and feedback
60 hours directed distance study delivered through the interactive ICELT website
four lessons supervised and assessed by a course tutor (you can be assessed with two different age ranges)
four classroom-related assignments
four language tasks which focus on developing the teacher’s language skills in the classroom context
approximately 300 hours independent study including reading, research and lesson & assignment preparation
directed observation of eight lessons. These may be of peers and/or other experienced teachers and two may be of videoed lessons

What are the course aims?

The ICELT course aims to achieve:

that students increase their knowledge of English and are made aware of the aspects of language which are relevant to them in a professional context
that students increase their understanding of the context in which their own students are learning English and of the principles behind the learning and teaching of language
that students increase their familiarity with the resources and materials used in the teaching of the English language and develop their skills in order to use, evaluate and, when appropriate, adapt or create material in the classroom
