Learning Centre

Our Learning Centre aims to support learners and teachers of English. We do this through a range of print, multimedia and on-line materials.

Membership of the Learning Centre is free for students on British Council language and teacher training courses but is also open to the general public.

Are you learning English?

Our Learning Centre can help you to improve your English language skills through a range of printed, interactive and multimedia resources.

It is a great opportunity to consolidate the work you do in class, using a wide range of books, graded readers, audio and video cassettes, covering all levels from beginners to advanced.

In order to get the most out of the Learning Centre you can use any of modern computers with Internet access, DVD players and Real Audio.

You can:

  • access the Internet with Student Links to help you practise English
  • access our learnenglish website
  • use our specially designed CD ROMs
  • use language practice computer programmes
  • improve your chances for PET, KET, FCE, CAE, CPE and IELTS exams
  • improve your grammar using practice books
  • expand your vocabulary using practice books
  • practise the four skills - reading, writing, listening, speaking
  • borrow from a range of books (adapted for learners)
  • borrow from a range of books for young learners
  • borrow from a range of English literature
  • enjoy a feature film in English (in DVD format)
  • watch or borrow an English course video (in VHS or DVD format)
  • read English newspapers and magazines

Some of our VHS videos and most of our DVDs are codified in the British PAL system, which is not compatible with the American NTSC system. However, you can watch them in the Learning Centre.

On our Online Library Catalogue you will be able to search for the materiales you need and know their location before coming to our Learning Centre.

Support to Young Learners and Parents

Our Learning Centre provides unique opportunities for Young Learners and their families to enjoy additional English language practice through a range of printed, interactive and multimedia resources.

Young Learners can

  • access the British Council website for Young Learners LearnEnglish Kids
  • use our specially designed CD ROMs
  • use language practice computer programmes
  • borrow from a range of books (adapted for learners)
  • enjoy a feature film for children in English (in DVD format)
  • read English magazines

Most of our DVDs and some of our VHS videos are codified in the British PAL system, which is not compatible with the American NTSC system. However, you can watch them in the Learning Centre, where there are a number of compatible DVD players.

Parents can

  • access the British Council support page for parents
  • subscribe to a free parents newsletter
  • borrow from a range of books to read with their children
  • read English newspapers and magazines

Using our Online Library Catalogue you can search for the materials you need and identify their location before coming to our Learning Centre.

Our Resource Centre can help support your teaching and professional development through a range of printed, interactive and multimedia resources.

It is a great opportunity to consolidate to strengthen and maintain your English and keep up to date with English language teaching Methodology, using a wide range of books, graded readers, audio and video cassettes, covering all levels from beginners to advanced.

In order to get the most out of the Resource Centre you can use any of the cassette recorders, video recorders and televisions, and modern computers with Internet access, DVD players and Real Audio.
