What are Chevening Scholarships?

The Chevening Scholarship Programme was established in 1983 by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and is administered globally by the British Council and British Embassies. Chevening Scholarships are offered in over 150 countries and allow young professionals from around the world to take postgraduate courses in the UK each year. In the case of Colombia we offer funding for Masters Degrees.

In Colombia more than 200 professionals have been awarded scholarships in the last 10 years. Scholarship holders in Colombia include officials currently working for the Colombian Government, NGO’s and the private sector at a senior and decision making level.

Who are awarded the scholarships?

Candidates should have skills as opinion formers, future leaders and policy makers. Candidates’ studies should have the potential to benefit their country as well as their professional development.

The priority study areas for master degree courses in 2012 are:

Climate Change/ Environment/ Natural Disaster Management and Prevention
Political Science/ International Relations
Human Rights
Internacional Humanitarian Law
Conflict Resolution/ Prevention
Governance/ Public Sector Reform

Why apply for a Chevening Scholarship?

What are the requisites to apply?
have more than three years of work experience since graduating
to be in the process of applying to a master course at your chosen university/universities in the United Kingdom
to hold an IELTS Academic English certificate with a score of 7 or an equivalent such as TOEFL score of at least 95 internet version. (this could be higher depending on the university)
to be a professional with an excellent academic record, have exceptional work experience in your chosen area of study, and be committed to becoming a leader in this area
to be resident in Colombia and be prepared to guarantee you will return to your country and contribute to its socio-economic development by employing the knowledge you gain in the UK

What can a Chevening Scholarship cover?
the cost of course fees for a master course in a British university for up to one year
a monthly living allowance
visa costs
Chevening Scholarships do NOT cover air-fares

Successful candidates could be offered Full Scholarships (course fees + monthly living allowance) or Partial Scholarships (Contribution to Fees Only).

When can I apply?

Applications accepted:  December 2011 – 6 February 2012
(The online application system will close at 24.00 hours Colombian time on Monday 6 February)
Interviewing of selected candidates: end of April 2012
Notification of candidates: May 2012
Courses begin:  September - October 2012

Prospective scholars applying for Chevening scholarships for 2012-13 will need to complete their online application here. EChevening was designed to be used on Internet Explorer so we recommend all candidates use this when accessing the site.
