China-UK@Law
The British Council is delighted to acknowledge 15 years of co-operation to support China's move towards a society underpinned by the Rule of Law. We wish to mark the occasion with a series of law events under the banner of China-UK@Law.
GOVERNANCE IN THE UK
Legal Innovation
The Lord Chancellor's Training Scheme for Young Chinese Lawyers

This ten year programme, funded by the Lord Chancellor's Department, was launched in 2001.

The Scheme is managed by the China Law Council (including the Law Society and Bar Council) and administered by the British Council, with the involvement of the All China Lawyers' Association. The Scheme provides opportunities for up to fifteen young Chinese lawyers to undertake an one-year programme.

Women's Legal Professional Training Project
Through training courses in China and study tours to the UK, this two-year project will improve proficiency and raise awareness of personnel who engage in the work of protecting women's rights and interests.
Criminal Defence Lawyer Project
To strengthen the rights of those 'suspected' of crimes to access criminal defence lawyers, we are working with our Chinese partners on this two-year project.
Jiangsu Community Correction and Post-imprisonment Protection Seminar
Our Shanghai Office is working with Jiangsu Judiciary Department to bring UK experience and expertise to the development of a national pilot project in community correction and post-imprisonment protection. This project began with a seminar on Community Correction and Post-imprisonment Protection, held in Nanjing in September 2002.
Police Supervision
We are working with the Ministry of Public Security to assist with current reform of the public supervision system.
Administrative Law Project
We work with key Chinese partners involved in reform of administrative laws and regulations to support the reform agenda. Our Chinese partners include the State Council Legislative Affairs Office, the Supreme People’s Court and key research centres. Reform subjects include Public Order Administrative Punishment, Administrative Reconsideration and Judicial Review.
Law Summer School
In July 2002, we held a law summer school with the People’s University, providing 40 promising law students an insight into English Courts.
Young Lawyers’ Forum
Young Lawyers’ Forum was a three-day residential conference organised by our Shanghai office and Shanghai Bar Association. This project targeted the younger generation of lawyers, and provided them with a valuable opportunity to debate the crucial issues of reform and to develop strong links with their counterparts.
