Gender Education for Media

Started in September 2004, the 2-year Gender Education for Media project aims to raise the media’s awareness of gender equality and eliminate discriminatory language and images in media coverage. It also works towards building a network of media in the field of gender issues and the capacity building among university teachers, students and the media.

In the first year of the project, working with the Gender Education Forum of Sun Yat-Sen University and journalists concerned with gender equality issues, we held 2 workshops and 3 salons. About 30 participants from Sun Yat-Sen University and journalists participated and had in-depth discussions, in various forms, on relevant concepts and practices. The Guangzhou New Media Gender Network, a gender-related reports-monitoring and gender issues promotion network of a group of local media practitioners, was set up in December 2004.

In the second year of the project, the 3rd Gender Education for Media Workshop was held on 5-6 November 2005, with the aim to build up the capacity of self-sustainability for the New Media Gender Network. About 25 media journalists, mostly from print media, participated in the workshop. Through various interactive games, interesting role plays, heated discussions, UK and Chinese consultants’ presentation and comments, they developed a better understanding of mainstreaming gender in the media and got some practical guidelines for reporting on some specific issues. In addition, the UK consultant also gave a lecture in Sun Yat-Sen University on 7 November to students interested in gender equality promotion through the media.
