Workshop on Non-Governmental Organisation Capacity Building in South China

John Ferguson, a UK expert from the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations, was invited by us to deliver a 2-day workshop on Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) Capacity Building in Guangzhou in March 2005.  About 20 people from NGOs in south China (mainly in Guangzhou and Shenzhen) participated in the workshop.

Over the 2-day workshop, John Ferguson interacted with participants through presentations, group discussion, exercises on the following themes: International Comparison, Establishing a Mission, Strategy and Operational Goals, Project Planning, Recruiting, Retaining and Training Staff and Volunteers, Leadership and Management, NGO infra-structural Representation, Involvement with Local Community, Winning Resources and Working with Media.

According to participants’ feedback, the workshop gave them new insights and many points for discussion.  The workshop also provided a networking forum among NGOs in south China.

At the end of the workshop, we collected training needs and suggestions from participants through questionnaires.  In addition, we also visited several NGOs in south China to learn more about their training needs so as to help us develop the NGO Capacity Building project in the coming years.
