We are working in conjunction with Caijing magazine to develop a media project, to provide technical training for investigative journalists and to promote media rights.
UK experts will work with Chinese journalists to devise appropriate training and training materials. The journalists will also write articles focusing on the rights of journalists. The findings will be disseminated through a national conference. The principal outcome will be a curriculum that can be distributed to schools of journalism. 16 journalists will also visit the UK for training and work experience in 2004 and 2005. Other activities in China will also look at the legislative weaknesses that relate to the rights of journalists. This will lead to a group of journalists able to link the importance and contribution of open reporting to level playing fields in China's market economy.
On 12-13 January 2006, around 60 Chinese and UK participants including financial journalists, academics and government officials will attend Conference on Legal Reform of Financial Market and Media’s Role to discuss the media’s role in legal reform of Chinese financial market and look at some interesting cases of financial reporting. At the conference British Council will disseminate the training curriculum which has been used for two round of Journalist Training Programme in 2004 and 2005.
