Key facts
Dundee Scotland – Summer, 2009
  • Dare to be Digital provides students with a microcosm of the real world environment- offering funding, support and training within a ‘games studio’ environment over a 10 week period during the summer recess (June- August). The focus is on creating professional-standard product prototypes within 10 weeks, to take to potential investors and future employers. Develop Magazine said ‘this is the closest you can get to commercial game development’.

  • Dare to be Digital meets the needs of the games industry: Many of our ‘Dare graduates’ are recognised as having a pedigree training and are now working in the industry with companies like Rockstar North, Electronic Arts, Codemasters, Rare, Realtime Worlds, Microsoft etc. Dare to be Digital has also created six new creative industry start-up companies who have either secured external funding, or have gained commercial contracts within the games/learning environments.

  • Dare to be Digital is building an international reputation. We have run international feeder events in Malaysia in 2003 (funded and supported by the British Council). In 2004 and 2005 we ran Dare in Ireland with Enterprise Ireland. In 2005 and 2006, thanks to support from Fresh Talent and co-operation of the British Council, we created 15 International Dare to be Digital individual Scholarships. 2007 brought a new model whereby 2 international teams, 1 from India and 1 from China come to Scotland to work on their prototype with the addition of a Scottish Ambassador. It is to our benefit to have international entrants join their Scottish counterparts for the cultural, networking, educational and economic benefit this can bring and this document requests the co-operation of British Council China to support us in the selection of a team of 4 Dare Students from China to join 1 Scottish National student to make a team of 5 for the competition in 2009.
