In 2008 we recruited computer arts and programming graduates in China and India: (4 from each country) to join the UK competition. Marketing materials were produced and disseminated across these countries in collaboration with the British Council offices overseas.
The scholars were given as their ‘scholarship’ prize, return flights to Scotland, a project fee of £1700 for 10 weeks participation and free University self catering accommodation- exactly on a par with their UK counterparts. One Scottish Scholar was appointed to join each of the international team, completing the teams from 4 to 5 persons.
On arrival into the UK, we were aware that many of the scholars had never travelled to the UK or Scotland and we arranged a weekend involving sightseeing tours of Edinburgh and a ceilidh with Scottish fare.
A documentary film-diary was produced with the Scholars on a weekly basis during the 10-week project – extracts can be viewed on-line at http://www.daretobedigital.com/
In week 10 of the Project all student teams were taken to Dare ProtoPlay, the public showcase event of Dare. 3,000 people turned up to this event in 2008. 1,500 cast their vote for their favourite game. The final judging took place afterwards and a panel of experts from the industry selected 3 winners, who form the sole nominees to the BAFTA Ones To Watch Award.
The Chinese team ‘Ctrl_D’ won one of the prizes and were nominees for the BAFTA Award.
Follow-up questionnaires were issued to every Dare participant. The questionnaire demonstrated that every team member had a very positive experience and all would definitely recommend to their friends.
