ZeroCarbonCity

ZeroCarbonCity was a global British Council campaign launched to raise awareness and stimulate debate about climate change and the energy challenges faced by the world’s greatest cities. The programme involved activities in over 60 countries and reached over 8 million people. These included city debates; an online global debate featuring thoughts from key commentators; information and multimedia products; drama workshops; educational activities and resources plus a global touring exhibition, NorthSouthEastWest, which was a major component of our campaign.

NSEW
NorthSouthEastWest was a photographic exhibition developed by the British Council and The Climate Group which toured 100 cities in 2005 and 2006. The exhibition illustrated not only the impacts of climate change, but also the solutions which are being implemented to reduce carbon emissions in communities across the globe. These powerful images, captured by ten of the world’s top photographers from Magnum Photographic Agency, portray images from ten diverse nations and examine the wider implications of climate change on human rights; economics; technology and innovation, and our health.

Evaluation
A thorough evaluation of the whole campaign was carried out by Laura Grant Associates. The evaluation process had four strands: an online survey of participating offices, a telephone survey of UK stakeholders, up to six observational visits in selected countries and up to three discussion events.

Case Studies
A vast amount of data, information and images collected through the evaluation resulted in six case studies to showcase best practice of a global campaign. Each case study highlights different factors that contributed to the success of ZeroCarbonCity.
