Sino-UK Workshop on Food Safety

In order to promote the exchanges between food safety scientists on their latest research, the Sino-UK Workshop on Food Safety was successfully held in Zhengzhou on 11-13th Dec 2006. It was jointly funded and organised by the British Council Beijing Office and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), with the support from Henan Academy of Agricultural Sciences (HAAS) and Henan Agricultural University (HAU).

5 UK experts and 10 Chinese experts participated in the Workshop, all are established scientists in food safety research area. The UK experts are from UK Veterinary Laboratories Agency, Institute of Food Research, Nottingham University, Surrey University and Unilever’s Safety and Environmental Assurance Centre. The Chinese experts are from HAAS, HAU, Peking University, Zhejiang University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Nanjing Agricultural University and Yangzhou University.  Professor Gaiping Zhang, Vice President of HAAS and Professor Diane Newell, from UK Veterinary Laboratories Agency chaired the Workshop. The audience included some 30 scholars in the field of food safety research of China.

The Workshop provided an opportunity for scientists from both countries to gain a reciprocal understanding of the latest research and provided a platform for communications which hopefully can lead to future cooperation between the two countries.

The three-day Workshop included lectures given by the 15 experts on their advanced   researches, discussions on issues of mutual interests, and visits to Henan Provincial Key Laboratory of Animal Immunology, Hennan Key Laboratory of Crops New Varieties, and Shineway Group, China's largest meat producer.
