TOLES SUCCESS AT LAW SOCIETY CEREMONY

The TOLES exams were confirmed as the world’s leading legal English exams at a ceremony at the Law Society of England and Wales on 19 October 2006

A group of Chinese lawyers who are in England as part of the highly prestigious Lord Chancellor’s training scheme were presented with TOLES Foundation certificates and all expressed their determination to go on to take the TOLES Advanced exam next year. In a presentation at the Law Society’s London headquarters in Chancery Lane, the delighted exam candidates were awarded their certificates by Mr Philip Province, Director of Global Legal English, and were warmly congratulated by Fiona Whittenbury of the Law Society of England & Wales.

The Lord Chancellor’s training scheme gives selected commercial lawyers from the People’s Republic the opportunity of spending a year in England and Hong Kong. The lawyers spent four months studying law and legal English at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) of the University of London and sat the TOLES Foundation exam in early September

In presenting the certificates, Fiona Whittenbury said:
“The Chinese lawyers now have the opportunity to take the TOLES Advanced exam next year – this will give them the top internationally recognised certificate on completion of the Lord Chancellor’s training scheme in April 2007 following which they will continue their training in Hong Kong”.

The ambitious young lawyers follow hot in the footsteps of colleagues from top international law firms such as Freshfields and Linklaters in adding TOLES to their skills. Their determination to get a legal English qualification recognised by the global legal community is a reflection of China’s escalating position in the world economy.

Speaking about TOLES after the presentation, Mr Province said:

“When recruiting lawyers, international law firms must consider not only an individual’s legal expertise but also their legal English skills. The huge variety of general English exams do not help with this task. Law firms tell us that they are easily able to test a job candidate’s speaking skills at interview and what they actually require is evidence of written legal English skills. The TOLES exams have been commended for solving this long standing problem and providing an accurate measure of ability in authentic legal English. Teachers of legal English are to be congratulated for their commitment to this exciting, rewarding and fast growing area of ELT. ”
