Writing Test

The Writing Test assesses writing skills in relation to the workplace. It lasts 45 minutes and is made up of two parts:

Short Message/Letter (50-60 words) 15 minutes
The test taker writes a short message or letter using the information given.

Report (180-200 words) 30 minutes
The test taker writes a short report following brief instructions. For this part, the test taker chooses one task from two alternatives.

Marked by two examiners who have been trained and certified by Cambridge University ESOL Examinations.

Assessment criteria:

  • how accurately and appropriately they use the language (the grammar and vocabulary)
  • how well they organise their ideas
  • how effectively the piece of writing achieves its purpose

The writing tests are distributed by BULATS agents, who provide an in-house service and arrange for the administration and marking of the tests. Tests need to be booked at least 10 working days before the desired test date. Test Report Forms will be delivered within 5 working days after the test.
