Speaking Test

The Speaking Test assesses speaking skills in relation to the workplace and takes about 12 minutes. The test is initially conducted and assessed by a qualified examiner, and it is recorded and then marked by another examiner.

It is made up of three parts:

  • Part 1: Interview (4 minutes)
This is a face-to-face interview. Test takers are expected to answer questions about themselves, their work or their studies, and their interests.
  • Part 2: Presentation (4 minutes)
The test taker gives a short presentation and answers questions on it.
  • Part 3: Information Exchange and Discussion (4 minutes)
The test taker talks with the examiner, exchanging information and engaging in a discussion.

Assessment criteria:

  • how accurately and appropriately they use the language (the grammar and vocabulary)
  • how well they develop the conversation and organise their ideas and how fluently they speak
  • how comprehensible their pronunciation is
  • how positively they contribute to the conversation, how much help they need to participate

The speaking tests are distributed by BULATS agents, who provide an in-house service and arrange for the administration and marking of the tests. Tests need to be booked at least 10 working days before the desired test date. Test Report Forms will be delivered within 5 working days after the test.
