The British Council has been sending UK graduates to China since 1997. They assist in the teaching and learning of English in Chinese state primary or secondary schools that hold a licence to employ foreign teachers. The majority of Language Assistants are placed in and around China’s major cities where we have offices. The number of placements is rising annually.
For the Language Assistants, the China programme presents an opening to explore this vast country, home to the oldest language in the world and one of the world’s four ancient civilisations, as well as to make friends and even learn Chinese, tai ji or Chinese calligraphy. The programme is open to university graduates. More information is available at www.teachingenglish.org.uk/language-assistant
For the Chinese schools, employing a teaching assistant is an excellent opportunity to add a new dimension to their teaching staff and complement the school's English teaching curriculum. The school students have the chance to enjoy the opportunity of being taught by a native speaker of English and of learning about UK culture.
In China, the British Council works with the local Education Authority (municipal or provincial) in placing the UK Language Assistants. Priority is given to schools that have a linked school in the UK or are interested in having one, and are interested in developing collaborative learning projects with the UK schools.
