sponsor supported
The British Council would like to thank all the individual and corporate sponsors who have contributed generously, either through their financial support or their professional input, to the success of many of the School Links programmes, some of which are mentioned below.

BP Sponsorship

Thanks to BP South East Asia Ltd. Shanghai Representative Office, Shanghai Caojing Middle School, in Jinshan District on the outskirts of Shanghai, experienced for the first time native speakers teaching ELT between March 2002 and June 2003. After less than three semesters, the pupils were able to stage short plays, like “Snow White”, with the help of their teachers, Sarah Williams and Sarah Martindale. In order to make this happen, BP sponsored the teachers’ salaries.

Cartelo Eastern Crocodile Apparels Co. Ltd. Sponsorship
For the last two years, pupils from Shanghai Yan’an High School and Shanghai Fudan High School, both from the Changning District of Shanghai, have had the opportunity to visit the UK. Last summer, they stayed with pupils from their partner schools -- Royal Grammar School, Buckinghamshire, and Kingsthorpe Community College, Northamptonshire, thanks to the sponsorship from Shanghai Eastern Crocodile Apparels Co. Ltd.
Thames Water Sponsorship
“Network Challenge – From Reservoir to Tap” is a fascinating educational game developed by the Thames Water Company. Together with Thames Water, and with the help of the UK Language Assistants, the British Council organised a competition amongst various schools in Shanghai. The winning teams of the final competition held in Shanghai on 18th December 2003 -- the High School affiliated to Shanghai Teachers University and Changzheng Middle School – won a trip to London in February 2004 to compete with their UK counterparts. Thames Water covered the cost of the trip for both the school teams and their Science teachers. This science project game was carefully designed by Thames Water to develop team working skills and foster a team spirit as well as increase environmental awareness among young people.
Unilever Sponsorship
English Taxi, a computer game for English language learning on CD-Rom, was produced with sponsorship from Unilever. The player plays the role of an English taxi driver who has to listen to instructions from his or her passengers in English, check the map, and take them to their destination in the quickest and most efficient way. It has various levels with increasingly difficult instructions. The game can be played by individuals or by a group in a computer laboratory. A final score is awarded at the end.  The launch of the game in various cities in China involved large numbers of Chinese schoolchildren, and several schools have integrated the game into their English classes. Free copies of the game have been made available for distribution at British Council offices.
