Basic Education
Improving education for young learners
Basic education is considered very important in the UK and in China. Our projects in pre-school education include promoting the use of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in schools, school improvement and curriculum development.
Pre-school education

We work with Chinese education and research institutes to promote co-operation on early childhood education between the UK and China. Previous events include a successful  Lifelong Learning event that we organised in 2000 to emphasise the importance and benefits of lifelong learning, which also included an Early Childhood Education Project.

For details of this project please read the Review Report (in Chinese only) by Professor Liu Yan, Beijing Normal University.

Promoting the use of Information Communication Technology (ICT)

Information Communication Technology is developing rapidly and is proving to be a great asset to school education around the world. The UK Government initiated the first ICT in Schools programme in the UK in 1997 to stimulate and support the use of ICT in UK schools, improve education standards and encourage new ways of teaching and learning.

Following the success of this project, with the assistance of Beijing Municipal Educational Commission and Beijing Academy of Educational Sciences, we introduced an ICT in Schools project to promote integration of ICT into the Chinese school curriculum in in 2002.

In Guangdong, we are working with the Guangdong Department of Education on an English Teaching and Internet Project (ETIP), to meet the demand for Information Communication Technology (ICT) in schools. English teaching is being used as a pilot subject, but we hope that other subjects will be introduced soon.

School Leadership Improvement

Working with Beijing Municipal Education Commission, we organized training for about 60 primary and secondary school principals in November 2003. Training focused on the following issues:

  • school management, including teacher management and teaching affairs management;
  • the relationship between schools and the community;
  • the relationship between schools and government authorities, eg. LEAs and national educational agencies;
  • recent school management and administration reforms and practical applications;
  • principal training systems and practice ;
  • quality issues;
  • accountability;
  • curriculum and examinations.
