1. Super Vision Design Art Show It will be a ‘first’ for Beijing and China – with the mid-May opening of a show in 798 featuring ‘design art’ by creatives from the UK. Design Art is a name coined in the last few years for a category of work which is not craft – with its basket work and potters wheel image, nor is it fine art – with its astronomical prices. 3. Nurturing Enterprising Creativity for a Career in Fashion and Textiles Lecture The British Council invited Anne Smith, Dean of the School of Fashion and Textiles, Central Saint Martins, to speak on the current fashion trends in the UK and discuss how to creatively nurture business opportunities. Anne Smith has had ten years experience in designing and showing fashion and textiles collections of women’s, men’s and children’s wear in London, Paris, New York and Tokyo. 4. Serie Architects: Working in Series From 7 September to 31 October 2009, architecture SH featured the ‘Serie Architects: Working in Series’ Exhibition. From Icon Magazine’s 20 Essential Young Architects 2008, the gallery presented Christopher CM Lee’s seven projects led by Lee and Kapil Gupta - emerging young architects with international offices in London, Mumbai and Beijing. 5. China-UK Creative Entrepreneur Networking Event With the launch of the China-UK Creative Entrepreneur Network, the first China-UK Creative Entrepreneur Networking events was held in Hangzhou and Wuxi in early August. During these events three outstanding young creative entrepreneurs (CEs) from the UK and East Asia shared their creative ideas and success stories with audiences, and discussed with Hangzhou and Wuxi CEs the opportunities and challenges the small and medium creative enterprises were facing. 7. China-UK Creative Entrepreneur Club Gathering Creative Industry has become a new economic driver in 21st century. As well as their dreams and passion, successful creative talents also embrace an understanding of creativity and entrepreneurship. The UK was among the first to identify the potential and look to nurture creative talents and develop the industry. 8. China-UK Creative Entrepreneur Network The UK was among the first to identify the potential and look to nurture creative talents and develop the industry. To share the UK experience and to support local creative industry, the British Council invited six successful creative entrepreneurs from the UK and China to share their experience and business models at the Third Guangzhou International Design Week on 1 December 2008. At the same time, the British Council is proud to launch the ‘China-UK Creative Entrepreneur Network’ as an interactive platform for creative talents to communicate and demonstrate their capability, as well as kicking off the 2009 Young Creative Entrepreneur Awards in music, design, performing arts, visual arts and interactive media at this first network meeting. 9. 48-hour Inclusive Design Challenge Organised by the British Council and led by the Royal College of Art in the UK, “Living Together, Innovating Together” 48-hour Inclusive Design Challenge was a mentored competition aiming to raise the importance of inclusive design as a tool for business advantage and innovation to the design communities. The competition was held in Hong Kong in August 2008, with six inter-disciplinary teams of designers from China and East Asia, including 16 from Hong Kong, led by a veteran designer from the UK, paired with a disabled design partner and asked to work against the clock to a thematic brief delivered at the start of the Challenge on Day 1. 10. Design UK The British Council organised the Design UK campaign from May to November in 2007. The campaign showcased the dynamic creative industries in the UK, as a world centre of arts and creativity, as well as to provide a platform for China-UK design exchanges. Activities included UK participation in Get It Louder 2007, IYDEY and other design activities.
