Prizes for the winners in China

We will choose the top three winners. The first prize winner will be selected to represent China and take part in a tour to the UK in September 2006 with nine other finalists from Brazil, India, Indonesia, Lebanon, Lithuania, Oman, Slovenia, South Africa and Thailand for an approximate 12- day visit, including  a tour of the national design industry which will culminate in attending the 100% Design fair (21-24 September 2006) and the London Design Festival (15-30 September 2006).

This programme, which is created with UK partners, will take the finalists to London and Glasgow to meet leaders of the design sector. The programme will comprise visits to designers, design-lead retailers and manufacturers, publishers and cultural institutions active in the procurement of design and architecture. The tour will include elements of the London Design week programme – opening, seminars, events and closing–  at 100% Design.

Participation in the 100% Design exhibition and their presence at the British Council events and fair stand will allow the finalists to develop their own network still further and promote their home design scene.  While at 100% Design they will:

  • Participate in a seminar discussion about design from transitional and developing economies
  • Be included in a display about the IYDEY award and their work at the British Council stand at the fair and in a printed brochure to be distributed at the fair
  • Participate in the IYDEY award ceremony and any other relevant international receptions.

The second and third prize winners will have chance to participate in the Young Talents Show organised by the Hong Kong Design Centre in September of this year. They not only will be able to present their own works at the show but also they will be able to meet and network with the 2005 IYDEY finalists and other designers from Hong Kong.

Prize for the international award winner

The IYDEY international award judging process will take place during the UK tour, prior to 100% Design. All 10 finalists will be interviewed and asked to repeat their presentation on their vision for their country’s design industry to an elite panel of judges from the UK design world. One of the ten finalists will be chosen to be the winner of the international award.

The winner of the International Young Design Entrepreneur of the Year Award will be announced at an awards ceremony at 100% Design. There will be two elements to the prize:

  • a financial award (we anticipate this being around 7,500), which will be linked to the UK and tailored to the winner’s specific needs. For example it might allow him/her to take a (series of) short training course(s) in the UK, or allow the winner to do a postgraduate course at a UK institution, or help fund a placement in UK industry, or allow the winner to bring over a series of UK specialists to run workshops etc. in his/her home country. The winner will be encouraged to draft his/her own proposal
  • a stand at 100% Design 2006, which will be provided free of charge by 100% Design.

Other prizes and activities

British Council China will also arrange networking events or workshop/seminars for the applicants, so that all interested applicants will have a chance to meet designers/practitioners from the UK and network with other people in this circle. Details of the plan to be confirmed.

The 20 participants being short listed will be awarded with certificates issued by the British Council China and co-organisers. They will also be given priority to attend the design events and workshops organised by the British Council.
