Introduction

The Red Dragon is the symbol of Wales. From 5 March to 25 May 2009 in Chongqing, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Beijing, an exhibition entitled Celebrating the Red Dragon gave the chance to see through the visual artwork of eight Chinese artists what inspiration was drawn from these descendents of the Golden Dragon tradition as they explored the land of Red Dragon in 2008. In addition, three renowned Welsh artists also travelled with their artwork to the land of the Golden Dragon to add their work to this cultural event. Lecture Statement:
The wild, thinly populated places, the moorlands and hillsides, provide endless ideas for paintings. However, traditional art frames cannot satisfy creating needs any more, and artists urgently call for a fresh and cliche- free way to explore and express ideas about a traditional subject. Mary will introduce her experience of getting inspiration from nature, and creating paintings by using available materials, like dyes and fabrics.

She will also bring some small digital prints, studies on paper, and sketchbooks with responses to Guangzhou, to share with participants. Mary suggests participants come to the workshop with a drawing and recycled materials from daily life (e.g. paper, or clothes etc). She also suggests they visit her website in advance, in order to understand her approach and style, for better interaction.

*ASAP is an experimental workshop initiated by Ping Pong, which involves participation of artists from PRD and abroad. It tends to explore the emergency of productivity in a dynamic context, through means of conceptual reproduction.
