Two Day Conference:

Chinese speakers:  

Feng Guochuan – artist and urban designer from Shenzhen
Wu Chao – Assistant Director of Benoy, member of ARB and RIBA
Zhou Yingzi - Chief Curator of the Shanghai eArts Festival, member of Shanghai Cultural Development Foundation.

UK speakers:

Tom Wexler – new media artist and producer
Stella Hall – international artistic director and producer Culture10   
Joshua Bolchover – arts curator, urban researcher and architectural designer
Wiard Sterk – artist and Executive Director of Safle, a public art consultancy in Wales

Facilitator:

Richard Sobey – artist and CEO of IOU well known internationally for innovative collaborations in public spaces
Zhu Ye – Executive Editor of ‘Urban China’, Idie Artist, curator.

Discussion looked at a range of practice and issues surrounding the theme and aimed to identify ways to engage more people in the development of the spaces in which we live and work.   This included:  UK and Chinese examples of arts activity and festivals activity and impact on city spaces, economies and international profile;  ways to involve communities and provide access to the way cities are shaped;   an exploration of the practicalities of presenting arts in public spaces;   and issues related to Chongqing itself.

A closed practical session saw UK and Chinese practitioners explore four public sites in Chongqing to demonstrate the potential arts activity and benefits that could be realised.   The ideas were presented at the Forum for discussion.

A major art work will be presented in Chongqing in November 2009, launching a series of activities developed from the projects activities.


More Information:


Transforming Public Spaces (TPS) is a six-month collaborative programme bring together artists from both China and the UK with Chinese architects, urban planners and designers. The project aims to increase awareness of the issues and opportunities that exist in the development of public spaces and cities in general.   A key element of this is the consideration of the role that art can play in shaping cities by transforming public spaces and thereby improving the quality of urban life.

This project aims is to:

  • engage communities with the development of their cities
  • build bridges between artists and creative entrepreneurs from the UK and China
  • demonstrate the positive influence of the creative industries of the UK and China
  • strengthen the engagement of creative entrepreneurs, artists and urban planners within the city.
