China-UK Arts Management Dialogue

The Cultural and Education Section of the British Embassy in partnership with the UK’s Clore Leadership Programme is organising the China-UK Arts Management Dialogue with the support of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music.

Four UK leaders from the arts and cultural sector will gather in Shanghai for the first time alongside Chinese counterparts to explore current issues affecting both Chinese and UK cultural organisations with a specific focus on arts education, participation, marketing and fundraising.

In addition to professional development, the Dialogue provides a networking opportunity for local Chinese arts managers and aims to strengthen cultural exchange and cooperation between the UK and China

How to register:

This activity is oriented to arts management professionals. Teachers and students from related areas are also welcomed. Booking in advance is required.

1. Paul Reeve

Director of Education, Royal Opera House

After graduating with a Theatre Arts degree Paul worked as a performer and director in theatre and music theatre; directing credits included two plays for children in London's West End. He was involved in a number of pioneering educational projects with several arts organisations, and wrote a children’s book and television series (which he also presented). He moved into arts education on a permanent basis 15 years ago, initially as Education Officer at the Royal Shakespeare Company and subsequently Education Manager at English Touring Opera. He joined the Royal Opera House in 2000 and was appointed Director of Education in June 2006. He has co-written a book – The Best of Both Worlds - about partnership working between arts organisations and schools, and is also Chair of East London Dance.


2. Lucy Bird
Director of Marketing and Development, The Sage Gateshead

Lucy Bird started her working life in independent television, working on live current affairs programmes and documentaries for five years. Leaving to have two sons enabled her to set up and run her own corporate entertainment business, creating and offering specially tailored conferences and events in stately homes not usually open to the public. After successfully selling that company on, she returned to television to produce programmes, videos and advertisements for a newly created independent television company.

In 1990 she took up the post of Administrative Director with the energetic small-scale touring theatre company, NTC Touring Theatre, based at Alnwick Playhouse in Northumberland. She was centrally involved in the development of the company’s five year plan through which the company was awarded one of the first drama franchises from Northern Arts, enabling NTC to tour nationally with their work specifically created for rural communities.

Nearly five years later she became the first Manager for the North of England for Arts and Business, brokering and supporting a variety of private sector partnerships with arts organisations.

In 1997 she was asked to join Northern Sinfonia and, alongside its Chief Executive (and during a period as Acting Chief Executive), secured the orchestra’s future as the orchestra of The Sage Gateshead. In 2000 she applied for and was appointed to the post of Director of Marketing and Development for The Sage Gateshead, the spectacular £70 million Norman Foster building on the banks of the River Tyne that opened in December 2004. Its creation has enabled a pioneering international programme in all kinds of music performance and participation. As well as being responsible for all streams of private and public sector fundraising, including the creation and strategy behind The Sage Gateshead’s endowment fund currently standing at £12 million, she is responsible for policy and strategy creation and implementation for marketing, media and pr, and customer services (including catering and retail). In 2003 she won the Garrett Award – a national award in recognition of a significant professional achievement in fundraising.

Lucy is a member of the Regional Development Agency One North East’s Tourism Advisory Board and a Governor of Newcastle’s Royal Grammar School.

3. Kingsley Jayasekera
Marketing and Communications Director, Sadler’s Wells

Kingsley has previously worked at Rambert Dance Company, London Bubble Theatre and as an Account Manager at Dewynters, the leading west end theatre advertising agency, where he worked with a number of clients including The Royal Opera House, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Bill Kenwright Ltd, the Really Useful Group, the Kirov Ballet and Opera, Hampstead Theatre, Greenwich Theatre, SOLT, the Barbican Centre and the Royal National Theatre.

In 2000 Kingsley became Marketing Manager of Digital Classics plc and its subsidiary companies: Onlineclassics.com – an internet site offering over 300 hours of classical music, opera and theatre over the internet as broadband streaming video; Digital Classics Distribution – one of Europe’s largest arts programme catalogues; and Iambic Productions/The Performance Company – TV production companies specialising in arts broadcasting (responsible for filming the National Theatre’s productions of The Merchant of Venice and Oklahoma!).

In 2001 he joined McCabes as Head of Client Services and in 2002 became one of two Group Account Directors at MandH Communications working on many west end productions including Mamma Mia!, The Full Monty, the Woman In Black, Stomp and The Mousetrap.

Kingsley is currently Marketing and Communications Director for Sadler’s Wells, running marketing, press, multi-media and ticket office operations for Sadler’s Wells, the Lilian Baylis and Peacock Theatre.

In addition Kingsley is also on the board and a guest speaker for Audiences London, the arts audience development agency for the London region and for Dance East, the dance development agency for the East of England.

4. Peter Jenkinson OBE
Independent ‘cultural broker’


Born in Essex of English and Irish heritage Peter Jenkinson has worked for over 20 years in the cultural sector, passionately advocating and acting for deep and lasting change across the cultural and political landscape. In his current role as an independent ‘cultural broker’ he works across a diverse portfolio of disciplines and sectors including broadcasting, public policy, regeneration, museums and galleries, and leadership development. Prior to this Peter has had a distinguished and award-winning career working across the arts and culture, including his role as founding director of the Creative Partnerships programme and the initiation and delivery of the world-class £21M The New Art Gallery Walsall. His key areas of interest include the critical roles of creativity, diversity, and broader cultural literacy across society as well as a commitment to building social justice and intelligent democracy.

1. Deng Yijiang
Deputy Director of NCPA, Professor of Beijing Dancing Academy

Been awarded more than ten national prizes, Deng is extensively experienced in dance education and choreography. He was appointed as the Deputy Director of Beijing Dancing Academy at 2001 and engaged in its teaching reform and innovation as an organizer. He also reformed Youth Dance Group of BDA as the director of the group. At 2007 he was appointed as Deputy Director of NCPA, in charge of arts education, film/TV production of NCPA’s programme, artwork collection as well as brand marketing and publicity. Deng is also the committee member of Chinese Association of Dance Artists, Deputy Director of Musical Research Association of China, Deputy Director of Music and Dance, Professional Arts Education Committee, Department of Education, China. He also sits on the judging panel of many dance competitions in China and abroad.

2. Qian Shijin
Artistic Director of Shanghai Grand Theatre

Shanghai Grand Theatre is the cultural name-card of Shanghai and will celebrate its 10th anniversary this year. Besides the efforts in promoting traditional art form like music, dance, opera and drama, SGT brought in Broadway musicals successfully in 2002 and built a record in 2006 with The Lion King for its remarkable achievements with 101 performances, 160,000 audiences as well as 72 million RMB box office income. The artistic director of SGT Mr. Qian will share with you the experience on how to turn musicals into a grand event of the city.  

3. Wang Yong
Professor, Deputy Head of Arts Administration Department in Shanghai Music Conservatory

He also hosts a famous and popular music program The Weekly Radio Broadcast Concert in Shanghai Media Group. He will elaborate major arts education activities in Shanghai, including Arts Education Program in Shanghai Grand Theater and Oriental Citizen Concert in Shanghai Oriental Arts Center.

4. Yang Shaolin
General Manager of Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre, first-grade national actor, Vice President and General Secretary of Chinese Dramatists Association

Since Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre’s establishment in 1995, it has succeeded in building its reputation in Shanghai. With effective skills such as market research, professional staffing, individualized service and entrepreneurship, it develops a large drama audience with majority of young white-collars.
