About The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra

Founded in 1840, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra is the longest surviving professional orchestra in the United Kingdom. In 1957 the orchestra was granted “royal” status by Queen Elizabeth II. Their first Europe tour started in 1996, and in 1993 they were the first non-Czech orchestra to perform the opening concert of Prague Spring Festival. Since then they have became one of the major orchestras in the world.

Conductor: Vasily Petrenko

Born in St. Petersberg in 1976, Vasily Petrenko took up the post of Principal Conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in September 2006. As a renowned young conductor, he was was crowned Male Artist of the Year at the 2010 Classical Brits.

Following competition success – including the Fourth Prokofiev Conducting Competition in St Petersburg (2003), First Prize in the Shostakovich Choral Conducting Competition in St Petersburg (1997) and First Prize in the Sixth Cadaqués International Conducting Competition in Spain (2002) – he was appointed Chief Conductor of the State Academy Orchestra of St Petersburg from 2004 to 2007. During recent seasons Petrenko has conducted many key orchestras in Russia including the St Petersburg Philharmonic and the Moscow Philharmonic.

Recordings with the RLPO include a double bill of Fleishman’s Rothschild’s Violin and Shostakovich’s The Gamblers, and a disc of suites from Tchaikovsky’s ballets. Recently released are his debut recordings for Naxos of Tchaikovsky’s Manfred Symphony (2009 Classic FM/Gramophone Orchestral Recording of the Year), Liszt Piano Concertos, and the first two discs in a Shostakovich symphony project, first No.11, then No.5 coupled with No.9.
