How to deliver reflective learning and participation music workshops
Water Music Workshop, organised by the Cultural and Education Section of the British Embassy in partnership with Fidelio Trio and the Dalian Development Area Grand Theatre, is designed to enrich the skills and knowledge of music teaching artists working with community groups. The focus will be on approaches for audience development - develop listening skills, key musical points to look out for, including rhythm, dynamic shape, melody, personal creative connection, etc; teaching methodology of reflective learning and participation, simple musical building blocks and provision of a framework for future workshops as well as core essence of music idea.
The programme focuses on the development of participants’ creative skills, and is designed to enable teaching artists to develop and deliver follow-up work themselves. A group of 20 instrumentalists will be invited as active participants and observation opportunities are also provided. Attendance at an open rehearsal and meetings with Fidelio members will provide a unique opportunity to see how they rehearse, what they rehearse, breathing, ensemble, blending of sonorities, interpretation, historical context – new music or old music, in the same process, which can inspire teaching artists to extend learning for schools and community.
The workshop is based on the following repertoire:
Ravel – Piano Trio 4th movement Deirdre Gribbin – How to Make the Water Sound Michael Nyman – Yellow Beach 5/8 section
This workshop is part of Capacity Building, an on-going arts education programme delivered across China. Together we aim to develop the capacity of teaching artists and other educators to deliver learning and participation activities which engage with a broad range of audiences and improve community access to - and participation in - the arts.
Who should attend:
- Teaching artists: music teachers (for ages 4-18), community workers and student instrumentalists
- Active participants: 20 instrumentalists
- Observers – no maximum number
