For the first time the John Moores Contemporary Painting Prize will launch outside of Liverpool in Shanghai, China 2010. This collaboration with China and Shanghai, Liverpool’ sister city will be an exciting move. John Moores Contemporary Painting Prize is the UK’s best-known painting competition for contemporary art, with a history of over 50 years.
John Moores (Shanghai) Contemporary Painting Prize will form part of the Biennial Festival of contemporary art of painting in China. The cooperation between Chinese and British contemporary art, will open up a brand new model for Chinese contemporary art and the norms of academia as a new paradigm.
John Moores (Shanghai) will maintain the British Contemporary Prize's model and concept, sponsored by the British John Moores Foundation, co-organized by Shanghai University Fine Arts College, Liverpool Biennial, UK , and Shanghai Gallery of art@Three on the bund and a number of art institutions to co-formed. John Moores (Shanghai) wishes to reach a wider audience as possible, to ensure this, there will be no entry fee for Chinese painters wishing to enter the competition.
Three judges from the UK and two from China, will come together to form the Vetting Committee, the decision-making body for the John Moores (Shanghai) Contemporary Painting Prize.
The competition will take place in two stages, the first assessing submitted digitised images and the second being the assessment of the original painting entries. Details of the painters submitting work will remain anonymous throughout the assessment period to ensure fairness. Guidelines for the judges on voting and scoring will be adhered to in order to ensure the democratic nature of competition.
John Moores (Shanghai) Contemporary Painting Prize takes the principles of the John Moores Foundation "mining, training, incentives to create a new painting of modern media artist. There will be the opportunity for selected works to be profiled, providing a platform for artists.
The short listed works from prize winners in John Moores (Shanghai) will be exhibited in the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, UK alongside the UK prize winners. The exhibition will remain for the period of the Liverpool Biennial festival Sept 2010.
John Moores (Shanghai) Contemporary Painting Prize will launch in March 2010, artists are invited to submit their entries from 20 March to 1 June 2010.
