2010 International Master Class on Directing (U.K.)

Following the 2009 International Master Class on Directing (U.S.) successfully held in Shanghai from 18 May to 22 June, 2009 by the Art Bureau of the Ministry of Culture, P.R.China and Shanghai Theatre Academy, Shanghai Theatre Academy will jointly organize the 2010 International Master Class on Directing (U.K.) in Shanghai from 17 May to 20 June in 2010.

This event will be hosted by the Directing Department of STA,  supported by the British Council. Four internationally renowned directors from U.K. will be invited to give lectures and conduct workshops on directing. Each International director will be teaching for one week, including fours days for lectures or workshops, the fifth day for the students’ presentation, and the last two days for the director and students to sum up the week by discussion.

We encourage the senior professional directors from all over China to participate in the master class, besides the faculty and students in the Directing Department of STA. This class will enroll 30 participants. The directors who have won awards of the “National Stagecraft Competition Project" will enjoy the enrolment priority and a certain amount of financial support.

The master class is the first project in China to introduce renowned international directing professors systematically. Shanghai Theatre Academy will invite experienced Chinese directors to collaborate with the international masters. During the same period, the World Exposition Shanghai China 2010 will be held. The EXPO will bring theatre troupes from more than a hundred countries all over the world to Shanghai, which will add great resources and attraction to the 2010 International Master Class on Directing(U.K.).

The British directors in the programme are:

  • Judith Pamela Kelly OBE, Artist Director, South Bank Centre
  • John McGrath, Artistic Director, National Theatre Wales
  • Nicholas Barter, Member of Equity, Fellow of Royal Society of Arts
  • Vicky Featherstone, Creative Director and Chief Executive, National Theatre of Scotland
