Beijing Post-show Talks

Alongside the performance programme, the Cultural and Education Section of the British Embassy has planned a series of post-show talks which will be open to the general public. Professional forums and networking opportunities in Beijing and Shanghai will give Chinese theatre professionals a chance to get closer to the creative action through discussions with the theatre companies about their work and the current UK arts scene.

SCHEDULE:

Professional forum
Time: 14:00-18:30 Sunday 23 Nov 2008
Venue: Imperial Granary (22 Dongsishitiao, Dongcheng District)
Target audience: Professionals working in the performing arts who want to develop skills for producing and promoting international work including theatre producers, presenters, promoters, directors as well as senior university students of drama and arts management.

Forum speakers:

  • Mr David Jubb, Artistic Director of Battersea Arts Centre (BAC)
  • Ms Christina Elliot, Project manager of Fuel  
  • The cast of Hysteria (one of The Best of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival productions): Lucinka Eisler, Ben Lewis, Giulia Innocenti, and lighting designer, Katharine Williams

Talks will range from:

  • the process of making a show
  • setting up a company
  • getting new productions to the Edinburgh Festival
  • supporting new experimental theatres
  • product and project management
  • audience development
  • and fundraising

*The professional forum in Beijing is presented by the Cultural and Education Section of the British Embassy in collaboration with Beijing Youth Theatre Festival and Imperial Granary.

Post-show talks
Time: Nightly, immediately following the performance (from Tuesday 4th Nov – Sunday 30th Nov 2008 – there are NO performances on Mondays.)
Venue: Mini theatre of Beijing People’s Art Theatre (22 Wangfujing Avenue, Dongcheng District)  
Target audience: Open to public

Late-night series of professional talks  
Time: 21.30-23.00 Friday 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th November
Venue: Triumphal Arch Restaurant & Bar (26 Wangfujing Avenue, Dongcheng District Tel.65128350)
Target audience: Open to theatre producers, presenters, promoters, directors, media and affiliates.

By presenting this programme with the performances, the Cultural and Education Section of the British Embassy aims to encourage even greater professional capacity among Chinese theatre practitioners. Through exposing them to contemporary British dramatic work, it is hoped they will support contemporary programming in local theatres and that they will engage in innovative creative thinking for their own productions and companies.
