IYDEY Results Revealed

Eight candidates from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chongqing participated in the final round of face-to-face interviews in Guangzhou last Thursday, 12 July 2007. The results have now been announced, as follows:

First Prize Winner:

Many thanks to all those who participated in IYDEY, and we wish Mr. Xu Ming success in the UK Finals in exposing the strength of Chinese design! Meanwhile, Mr. Xie Dahuan and Mr. He Jianxiang will have the chance to attend London Design Week, with the return tickets supported by the British Council.

Don't miss the International Young Design Entrepreneur of the Year (IYDEY) 2007 Award!

The British Council is searching for a talented young Chinese entrepreneur to represent China in the IYDEY award programme in the UK along with representatives from nine other countries. You will have the opportunity to visit London on an all-expense-paid 10-day trip, attend the 100% Design exhibition and meet with leaders from the design sector in the UK and abroad.

About 100% Design

The 10 participating countries are:
Argentina, China, Estonia, India, Indonesia, Nigeria, Poland, Slovenia, Thailand and Venezuela.

Design sector definition
For the purpose of this award participants can be drawn from any of the following sectors:

  • Architecture, interiors and environment
  • Graphic design: communication, publishing, branding and multimedia
  • Product design manufacture: furniture, industrial products and craft
  • Interactive and digital media
  • Design promotion: exhibitions, events, festivals and retail

Criteria for applicants

  • Be between 25 and 35 years of age
  • Already work in the design sector (as defined above)
  • Be entrepreneurial and have shown their ability in the promotion of design in their country, in either a commercial context, public context, or both
  • Through their character, drive and abilities demonstrate their potential to be a future leader of the sector in their country
  • Good conversational level of English as each participant is expected to make a presentation in front of a panel of judges.

About IYDEY

IYDEY is one of a range of International Young Creative Entrepreneur (IYCE) awards, also including the existing International Young Publisher of the Year (IYPY) and the International Young Music Entrepreneur of the Year (IYMEY) awards, and upcoming awards in film and fashion.  Award programmes for creative talent are common but this programme is unique for its recognition of the central role of young creative entrepreneurs in the development of a competitive and sustainable creative economy.  For more information about these other existing awards please see:

The aim of the IYCE programme is to help to sustain the development of the next generation of leaders within the creative sector.  We want to demonstrate that the UK is a centre of creative thinking and entrepreneurship, a vital nexus of international networking and a place where they can always do business. Vice versa, it is essential for the UK to develop a culture of engagement and collaboration with these young international creative entrepreneurs at this vital stage in their professional development.

Twenty young design entrepreneurs from fifteen countries (Argentina, Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Lebanon, Lithuania, Nigeria, Oman, Philippines, Poland, Romania, South Africa, Slovenia and Thailand) have so far taken part in the programme, and we are proud to have two impressive winners: Lanre Lawal, an experimental graphic designer and filmmaker from Lagos, Nigeria and Paula Dib, a social designer from São Paulo, Brazil.

About 100% Design

In 2007, the 100% Design International Trade Fair will take place in London from 21-24 September. It is the UK’s largest and most respected commercial interior design fair and the only exhibition of its kind where exhibitors are selected by jury.
