The first prize winner will be selected to represent China and take part in a tour to the UK in September 2007 with nine other finalists for an approximate 12- day visit, including a tour of the national design industry which will culminate in attending the 100% Design fair (21-24 September 2007) and the London Design Festival (15-30 September 2007).
This programme, which is created with UK partners, will take the finalists to London and Glasgow to meet leaders of the design sector. The programme will comprise visits to designers, design-lead retailers and manufacturers, publishers and cultural institutions active in the procurement of design and architecture. The tour will include elements of the London Design week programme – opening, seminars, events and closing – at 100% Design.
Participation in the 100% Design exhibition and their presence at the British Council events and fair stand will allow the finalists to develop their own network still further and promote their home design scene. While at 100% Design they will:
- Be included in a display about the IYDEY award and their work at the British Council stand at the fair and in a printed brochure to be distributed at the fair
- Participate in the IYDEY award ceremony and any other relevant international receptions.
The second prize winners will be awarded with international return flight tickets between China and London. Winners could choose to visit UK during the London Design week in September.
Prize for the international award winner
The IYDEY international award judging process will take place during the UK tour, prior to 100% Design. All 10 finalists will be interviewed and asked to repeat their presentation on their vision for their country’s design industry to an elite panel of judges from the UK design world. One of the ten finalists will be chosen to be the winner of the international award.
The winner of the International Young Design Entrepreneur of the Year Award will be announced at an awards ceremony at 100% Design. There will be two elements to the prize:
- A financial award (we anticipate this being around £7,500), which will be linked to the UK and tailored to the winner’s specific needs. The winner will be encouraged to come up with their own proposal. For example Lanre Lawal (IYDEY 2005 winner) is using his prize fund to create a TV program raising awareness about design in Nigeria.
- Exhibition at the British Council stand at 100% Design 2008, or, as suitable, another more relevant showcasing/exhibition opportunity at London Design Festival 2008.
