1. What are the qualities that an international young creative entrepreneur must possess?
Entrepreneurial ability
- Passion for their creative sector: Although not primarily creative talent themselves creative entrepreneurs are the mediators that bring these products to the market and as such require an ability to respect, understand and manage creativity
- Originality of ideas: Unique ideas and flexibility to develop these in a commercial context
- Understanding of their market: Ability to spot gaps within it and exploit these opportunities into real solutions
- Risk taking: Ability to assess, enjoy and face risks, with the skills and initiative to successfully drive these ideas forward
- Corporate skills: Business acumen, commercial awareness and managerial ability with the end product of articulating a business vision and strategy
- Interpersonal skills: Ability to sell an idea, negotiate and network
Character and leadership ability
- Self confidence: Possess the focus and ambition to support their original ideas.
- Market awareness: Knowledge of the local market situation and their role within this.
- International outlook: The will and ability to develop a mutually beneficial culture of personal and professional engagement, collaboration and partnership with the UK, and to benefit from the key dialogue with the rest of the international participants.
- Leadership ability: Have the vision to combine their creative and entrepreneurial skills to be a leader in their national creative community. Ability to share the lessons of their IYDEY experience with their local contemporaries.
- Agent of change: ability to make a difference - as not merely successful in business terms but to also be able intervene in the domestic market to impact positively on its infrastructure.
2. On what parameters will the applicants be short-listed? Short-listing will be done based on the qualities and vision of the candidate to be a potential leader in their national design sector, with an entrepreneurial drive that is tied to a strong creative ability. 3. Is there room for flexibility in the age criteria? Applicants will have to be strictly within the age range between 25 to 35 years. 4. Is the award open to Chinese nationals based outside China? Yes, as long as they can contribute to China’s design sector. 5. Do I need to be a designer? We recognise that a participant may strongly influence the business of design without being a practising designer. 6. I have business ideas in design but am not an entrepreneur. Can I apply? YES. For more information and any other queries you can contact us at IYDEY@britishcouncil.org.cn 7. Do I need to send samples of my work? This is not essential. If you wish to send them please note that British Council will not take responsibility for any damages caused. 8. I am teacher of design. Can I apply? Applicants who are primarily academics are unlikely to be short-listed or successful. 9. How is this award different? The award celebrates artistic talent but what sets IYDEY apart is that it recognises design entrepreneurs – the people behind this process, with the enterprise that must go hand in hand with creativity to make a living from it: to both promote high quality design and its importance on their national agenda.
