| Simon Heijdens was born in Breda, the Netherlands, in 1978. He studied film at Udk Berlin, and product design at Design Academy Eindhoven where his Moving Wallpaper was awarded best graduation project of 2002. Now based in London, he has designed products for Droog, Swarovski and Artechnica. His installation work, exhibited in London, Shanghai and Los Angeles; most notably features Tree, a projected image of trees that move in response to the wind and drop a leaf whenever someone passes by. Heijdens describes Tree as “an installation that traces and amplifies the leftovers of nature in the urban surroundings”. His Broken White china exploits the craquele ceramic glaze technicque which traditionally produces a surface texture of random fine cracks. In his project, the cracks develop after purchase: the china begins starts flawless and become “more wealthily decorated” with use. |
