OPEN International Performance Art Festival http://www.open10.com/ http://www.openart.org.cn http://www.douban.com/event/10709817/ http://www.douban.com/group/136834/
OPEN is the largest and longest-running non-governmental international Performance Art Festival in China. Founded in 2000 to establish a free international performance art platform in the spirit of openness, pluralism, equality, and experimentation, it is now celebrating its tenth anniversary. The first OPEN International Performance Art Festival in 2000 was curated by Chinese artist Chen Jin. The purpose was to promote the development of world art both experimentally and academically with no limits of nationality, political belief, religion or geographic area; art being its only pursuit. The site of OPEN 10, Dashanzi 798* is the largest international art zone in Beijing with more than 350 galleries and another 150 under construction. OPEN 10 will display works of artists from many countries and regions over a two-month period in the OPEN Realisation Contemporary Art Centre at 798 Art Zone in Beijing from 7 August to 27 September 2009. This tenth anniversary year will showcase more artists from more countries than ever before. Perhaps only under the circumstances of today's global economic crisis do we fully realise the importance of art and culture. During OPEN 10 we will witness the integration and exchange between different personalities, different ways of thinking, and different cultures. In order to fully display the diversity of world contemporary art, eight international curators (four male and four female) have been invited to independently curate for the duration of the festival. A large number of art institutions, government agencies and media will participate in this event. We will also show to the world this year’s festival by webcasting live works through the Internet and reporting via the media.
13 UK Artists:
1. Dr Bill Aitchison Work: 2012 (Check out the photos of his performance in Beijing HERE) Date: Saturday 15th August 2009, running for one hour between 1PM-6PM (Chinese subtitles will be provided)
For the 10th OPEN Performance Art Festival Dr Aitchison will bring his apocalyptic performance ‘2012’’ to Beijing for one performance on 15 August. In the performance 2012, independent researcher, Dr Aitchison, reveals a sequence of facts covering the war on terror, dog cloning, The Olympics, Saddam Hussein’s novels, I Ching predictions and the end of the world. 2012 concerns itself with the space where conspiracy theories, propaganda, science, art and politics cross over with one another becoming indistinguishable. Created in London and Beijing, 2012 collides perspectives, theories and visions offering a snapshot of uncertainty, of where desire, and fear, lead the imagination. Presented as part of the performance program on Saturday 15 August 2009, running for one hour between 1PM-6PM Chinese subtitles will be provided. Bill Aitchison is a theatre and performance artist based in London. He has presented his performances at theatres, festivals and galleries in the UK, US, Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, Israel and Croatia. He has spent extensive periods in New York’s downtown theatre scene and the European performance circuit working as a writer, actor and performer and genuinely is a Doctor, having a PhD in performance.
Created in collaboration with Boris Kahnert (light) and James Dunn (sound). Supported by Arts Council England, Theatre in Motion Beijing & Burton Taylor Studio

2. Sinead Bhreathnach-Cashell Email:zebedee_obrien@yahoo.co.uk
Sinead Bhreathnach-Cashell is an urban tumbleweed with magpie tendencies and a Fine Art degree. Graduating in 2007 and based in Belfast she works in many media forms; drawing, performance, film and installation. She can be encountered with playmates or alone, plundering the streets, making playful interventions and mess in search of a beach under the pavement. She currently organises ‘residence’, a series of artist interventions, workshops and a rolling residency programme with her sister Sighle in SHAC Association buildings around Northern Ireland. Sinead works collaboratively with Anne Marie and Dandy Dillon as Playgroup, organizes free drawing events with other members of ‘draw in’ and is a committee member of Bbeyond (www.bbeyondperformance.org). Her work is generated by a direct response to and observations from her surroundings and their social contexts. Strange seemingly out of place activities, awkward objects and vessels disrupt the surface and merge with the habitual traffic of the environment from which they have been appropriated. Taking play as a means of articulation transforms the world into an adventure playground and everything in it including yourself into potential playthings. The people who inhabit these spaces are invited to partake in absurd activities and share their wealth of experience, skills and knowledge.

6. Kenny Mc Bride "In answer to the world as it has been given me, artistic production is a manifestation of my humanity and a social action. Reverberation begins long before and continues long after the act." Kenny McBride is known for his meticulous planning of action and how the viewer experiences this. For many years his work has tackled traditional ideas of commemoration and conflict resolution. He has built an acclaimed body of work across continents that encourage a rethinking of the role and formal aspects of the monument in memorial culture. He employs processes of body-based performance and installation art to generate elaborate and expanded sculptural environments. These become emotionally charged spaces wherein the pathologies of the lived and the mediated experience assume a hallucinatory journey. Simultaneously they conjure a meditative engagement with encounter, and alienation. In his performances he works with duration cycles of between 4 hours and 3 days. This imbues the viewing experience with a sense of fragmentation, of site and of memory. Often work is devised specifically and responsively to a proposed site and its social context. Works often engage the full range of senses. He is author of uniquely intense works, presenting in diverse locations and contexts internationally. Previously he worked for many years as an artist in disadvantaged communities and within the rehabilitation and prison systems.

9. Bill Drummond Bill Drummond was born in 1953. Since leaving Liverpool School of Art in 1973 he has used various ways to investigate and converse with the world. These investigations and conversations have found expression via the written word, pop music and actions. He has had numerous one-man exhibitions in major UK regional galleries and across Europe. Since 1998 all Drummond’s work has been framed within the context of The Penkiln Burn. To have a better understanding of what this is please visit www.penkilnburn.com. His written words include the following books: The Manual (1989), Bad Wisdom (1996), 45 (2000), and How To Be An Artist (2002), The Wild Highway (2005), 17 (2008). The pop music (1977 - 1992) comprised of various projects, from Big In Japan to The KLF, the details of which have now faded into the twilight world of pub pop quiz questions and car boot sale bargain box oddities. The actions have been the one constant in his practice. There have been hundreds over the years, nearly all carried out anonymously and left unrecorded. Recently Drummond’s activities have included the instigation of The 17, the production of a pack of cards titled Silent Protest, the foundation of The Intercontinental Twinning Association, the making of The Soupline and setting up the websites: www.mydeath.net www.youwhores.com www.openmanifesto.com www.the17.org www.nomusicday.com

Dashanzi 798
In 2001 a group of Chinese artists discovered a factory, a closed-down site about to be demolished. This factory was designed in the early 50s by East German architects and was constructed in the Bauhaus style. The Chinese artists carried out some restorations and modifications influenced by contemporary design and transformed the space completely. As such, it now combines the past, the present, and the future of the ‘New China’; an extraordinary artistic zone dedicated to creation and exhibition of contemporary art. Now, seven years later, this district, Dashanzi 798, which covers a surface of 1,161,900 square metres, has been developed into an astonishing place, certainly the most important of its kind in Asia. It is also the largest space in the world devoted to contemporary art. Dashanzi 798 counts currently more than 350 galleries run by gallerists of different nationalities. Under constant development the district will soon see the opening of 150 new galleries. Dashanzi 798 has received a lot of attention around the world and has reached recognition on the international art scene. Thus, many personalities have visited 798. Among these are the Prime Ministers of Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, and Austria, the Princess of Belgium, Mrs. Annan, the French President, and the President of the European Union. Moreover, inspired by the 798 expansion, many foreign, public and private institutions from Belgium, Italy, Spain, The United States as well as the Chinese government have made large investments in order to showcase the contemporary art of their respective countries. Dashanzi 798 is now a modern and avant-garde district in Beijing, which presents cultural, artistic and commercial activities of a national and international level. Thanks to active networks of art galleries, museums and art centres of Asia, Europe and America, the large majority of artists who exhibit at 798 are invited to take part in exhibitions in many countries. Currently 798 is regarded as the most important platform in Asia and one of most significant in the world for the international promotion of artists.
