
Boost the Power of Creativity —China-UK Creative Entrepreneur Club Gathering
Creative Industry has become a new economic driver in 21st century. As well as their dreams and passion, successful creative talents also embrace an understanding of creativity and entrepreneurship. The UK was among the first to identify the potential and look to nurture creative talents and develop the industry. To share the UK experience and to support local creative industry, the British Council has invited three successful creative entrepreneurs from the UK and China to share their experience and business models at the Creative Entrepreneur Club Gathering on 20 December 2008.

Target audience: Young entrepreneurs, established creative organisations, fast-growing business enterprises and freelancers working in the creative industries. 1. David Parrish MBA MCMI MIBC MCIM FRSA Chartered Marketer (Creative Industry, UK) David Parrish helps creative businesses to become even more successful by bringing together creative people (the T-Shirts) with smart business thinking (the Suits). Successful creative enterprises integrate creativity and business. David offers an approach which brings together both creative passion and best business practice.
David is a business adviser, trainer and management consultant working with creative businesses and the agencies that support them. He helps his clients by drawing on his own experience as a creative entrepreneur combined with his knowledge as a specialist professional advisor. His practical experience is complemented by academic qualifications, professional accreditations and membership of several management institutes. He is the author of the book "T-Shirts and Suits: A Guide to the Business of Creativity", which has also been published in Chinese in Shanghai.
His work is internationally respected and he has assisted numerous businesses and organisations in Canada, China, Colombia, Denmark, Egypt, France, Germany, Holland, India, Italy, Norway, Singapore, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, United Arab Emirates - as well as in the United Kingdom.
David is working with UNESCO on a project to share best practice in the creative industries internationally.
2. ET Hu (Film, China) ET got her master’s degree in Beijing Film Academy. She is the co-founder and producer of Beijing Filmblog Media after many years’ experience as an English columnist and associate producer in Crystal Digital Technology Company.
In 2005, she and her partner Lola inaugurated the Filmblog Media, a company aiming to produce fresh genre films and to explore the cultural and commercial value of films. The first project of Filmblog Media ‘Chinese New Cinema: the Yunnan Project’, with the support of Yunnan Province, involves ten women filmmakers from the Chinese Mainland, Hongkong, and Taiwan to get together and make ten films in Yunnan. The first three completed features have been invited to the main competition programe in the A category International Film Festivals and established the brand image around the film industry. Since the time Filmblog Media was created, she has pushed several first feature directors into the international film platform and is actively exploring the various marketing models to distribute films.
ET was selected as the winner of China of International Young Screen Entrepreneur of the year 2008 launched by the British Council and invited to Britain for the better communication with the Britain’s leading figures in the screen industry. The comment from the IYSE judges goes, ‘ In an excellent presentation ET gave an in-depth analysis of the Chinese film market and her own distinct analysis of the traditional screen 1.0 model and new internet screen 2.0 model. She has an impressive understanding of technology and social networks and the jury are keen to see how she develops this on a local and international scale.’
3. Xie Yong (Design, China) Xie Yong is a science graduate from Beijing Institute of Technology. He also has a master degree in art & design from Tsinghua University and his tutor is famous design educationalist Prof. Wang Ming Zhi.
After his graduation from BIT, Xie Yong worked as an associate professor for Art & Design Academy of BIT, at the same time, designing for Lenovo and other national companies. He is also very active in competitions and won some remarkable awards, including the Gold Prize of the 9th International Design Competition, Osaka, Gold Prize of Chinese Red Star Award and four Winner Prizes of IF Design Award, China.
In 1999, Xie Yong and a partner founded Hope Design, a product design company mainly targeted on IT and Consumer Products. In the next five years, as Director, he leaded the team helping Aigo be the No.1 brand in digital products. In 2005, Xie Yong and partners founded Exmade design. From an idea to a real product, Exmade could lead a one-stop service. His responsibility is running the whole company, especially on design strategy, gives the team a sustainable power to leap ahead.
In 2006,as the finalist winner of China in IYDEY (International Young Design Entrepreneur of the Year), Xie Yong was invited by British Council to London for international cooperation and design activities. A comment from British Council is as follows: Xie Yong is a leading light in China’s campaign to replace the brand “made in China” with “designed in China” and has a clear and pragmatic grasp of the opportunity to develop design. In the same year, he was awarded as “Top Ten Design Youth of China” and “Gold Prize of Creative Youth of Beijing”.

About the China-UK Creative Entrepreneur Network
The China-UK Creative Entrepreneur Network will be launched by the British Council on 1st December 2008. It assembles Chinese creative entrepreneurs and potential creative entrepreneurs to set up an interactive information and resource network for the creative industries in China. The platform will host a mixture of networking events, inspirational talks and professional development workshops.
The network members are made up of young entrepreneurs, established creative organisations, fast-growing business enterprises, students and freelancers. Their disciplines range from advertising, architecture, art and antiques markets, crafts, design, designer fashion, film and video, interactive leisure software, music, performing arts, publishing, software and computer services, and television and radio.
Registered members will receive regular e-newsletters about the International Young Creative Entrepreneur awards, insights into the China & UK creative industries and the latest information reflecting the international scenes. They will also have the chance to download learning resources and watch video clips of inspiring speeches recommended by leading creative entrepreneurs from the UK and other countries, enter the International Young Creative Entrepreneur awards, and attend networking events and professional development workshops or business bidding programs organized by the British Council and our partners.

What is a creative entrepreneur?
- Creative entrepreneurs provide the link between artists (creative talent) and the market (creative consumers)
- An entrepreneur is not a manager and a creative entrepreneur is not necessarily an artist
- Somebody working in the creative sector, who is able to demonstrate business success in the classic terms of business growth (profit, market share, employees) and/or in terms of their reputation (quality and aesthetic) amongst their peers
- Somebody working in the creative sector who has developed a successful (in terms of impact and reach) social or not-for-profit enterprise in the sector
- Somebody working in the creative sector who has shown leadership in the industry by championing its development in country
- Somebody working in the creative sector who has developed initiatives (exhibitions, trade fairs, festivals etc) that develop and grow the market
