  Visual Arts:

1. Turner from the Tate Collection
The first major exhibition of the works of J.M.W. Turner opened at the National Art Museum of China (NAMOC) in Beijing on 23 April with 112 major works on loan from the Tate’s Turner Bequest. J.M.W Turner (1775–1851) is considered to be one of the greatest painters Britain has ever produced. He was the leading British artist of his era, an artist who raised the status of landscape painting to an unprecedented level. Please click here to read more.

2. The Fifth Curator: British Council International Curatorial Competition In Partnership With The Whitechapel Gallery
The Fifth Curator competition is a unique new opportunity for an aspiring curator to select an exhibition of works from the British Council Collection. We are looking for someone who is based permanently outside the UK, who believes they have the passion and knowledge to be a leading curator. The winning curator will be given unlimited access to the Collection, which includes over 8500 key works of British art and the resulting exhibition will be shown at the prestigious Whitechapel in the vibrant East end of London in April 2010. 3. Southern Gothic - Chloé Morrison Solo Exhibition
Artist Chloé Morrison was born in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, UK. She is in residence at the Chinese European Art Center in Xiamen for the months from January to June of 2009. Towards the end of this period she will present work in a solo presentation Southern Gothic of the influences she has garnered during her time at CEAC and in China. The small number and diminutive scale of the drawings presented may result in the exhibition seeming rather slight and inconsequential at first glance, however detailed and patient viewing will reveal the drawings intensively worked surfaces, heavily loaded with meaning. 4. Paul Huxley Asia Tour Exhibition
British painter Paul Huxley's first solo exhibition will be held by Chang Art Gallery in Beijing. Twenty paintings representing his past 10 years will be featured. This exhibition follows Huxley’s successful show at Chang Art’s sister gallery in Seoul, Watergate. Paul Huxley remains an important and influential artist and teacher, dedicated to the challenges that abstract painting presents to today’s painters. Please click here to read more.

5. Transforming Public Spaces
Transforming Public Spaces (TPS) is a major six-month project bringing together communities, artists, architects and urban planners.  The project aims to increase community awareness of public spaces and to also highlight the role that art can play in shaping cities by transforming public spaces and thereby improving the quality of urban life. 6. China: Through the Lens of John Thomson (1868-1872)
The first exhibition devoted to the China images of Scottish photographer John Thomson seeks to show the great diversity of photographs that Thomson took in China between 1868 and 1872.  What distinguishes the work was his desire to present a faithful account of China and its people – human aspects of life in China through an extensive record of everyday street scenes – rarely captured by other photographers of that era.  The exhibition will tour four museums in China.   Performing Arts:

1. Scottish Ballet China Tour
This classical ballet company performs across the UK and abroad. Its repertoire includes new versions of the classics, seminal pieces from the 20th century modern ballet canon, signature pieces by living choreographers and new commissions.  As a truly national company, The Scottish Ballet regularly performs at theatres throughout Britain and its long history of touring internationally includes visits to Malaysia, Portugal, Ireland, and Hong Kong. 2. 2009 International Young Performing Arts Entrepreneur Award (IYPAE)
The British Council will present The International Young Performing Arts Entrepreneur (IYPAE) Award for the second time in 2009. This award seeks to champion and celebrate the importance of creative entrepreneurs working in the field of the performing arts. In August 2009 the finalists will arrive in the UK for a two-week tour of the national performing arts sector. The tour will comprise visits, meetings, seminars, events and shows. It will also include a master class with an internationally renowned UK performing arts entrepreneur during which the finalists will be able to ask questions about the development of the his or her successful performing arts business. 3. Performance in Profile 2009
We are pleased to announce the publication of the 2009 edition of Performance in Profile, our directory of drama, dance, live art and outdoor work. The directory includes brief statements of artistic policy, details of shows available for international touring, and contact information for a total of 238 selected UK artists and companies working across the disciplines of dance, drama, live art and outdoor work.   Music:

1. AirplayUK Animation Music Video Screening
The 4th edition of AirplayUK features another selection of the most creative and entertaining music videos produced in Britain over the past few months. These are for a combination of new artists, up-and-coming bands, and established acts that all have new material released in the UK recently. This edition also includes a director profile, in this case a music video director who has made a significant contribution to music video creativity in the UK over a considerable period. Rupert Jones has directed both acclaimed videos, and short films for more than a decade, and he tells us about his work. Please click here to read more.

2. The Ayrshire Fiddle Orchestra China Tour
The Ayrshire Fiddle Orchestra was founded in August 1982 by Wallace and Lex Galbraith, who are both string instrument tutors in Ayrshire in South West Scotland, with the aim of encouraging and developing Scots Fiddle Music among local young musicians many of whom were, or had been their pupils. They will perform in Beijing Concert Hall on 2 July, Shanghai Oriental Arts Centre on 4 July, Hangzhou Grand Theatre on 7 July and Shenzhen Concert Hall on 9 July before travelling to Hong Kong and then back to Scotland. 3. International Young Music Entrepreneur (IYME) Award
In 2009 the British Council presented the International Young Music Entrepreneur (IYME) award for the fourth time. The award seeks to champion and celebrate the importance of creative entrepreneurs working in the field of music and to showcase international innovation in music promotion using the UK as the nexus for cultural, creative and commercial exchange.Ten international finalists for the award, who will be from these countries - China, India, Kenya, Latin American region, Lithuania, Malaysia, Nigeria and Poland, visited the UK in May 2009 to undertake a common programme where they took part in valuable networking both with key UK music industry contacts and amongst their IYME peers. The programme run alongside The Great Escape music industry conference and festival. Mr Meng Jinhui of Modern Sky Records went to the UK as the winner of China region. 1. Smart Talk@ Shenzhen Creative Entrepreneur Network gathering
Smart Talk@ Shenzhen will bring you Dominic, a successful UK creative entrepreneur (CEO of Plastered T-shirts) and the man behind the brand to talk about how building a business is a very long process and part of that process involves the time you take to invest in yourself, and your passions and dreams. It will also be a good opportunity for you to meet people from the creative industry and the China-UK creative entrepreneur network. Please click here to read more.

  Film:

1. The 12th Shanghai International Film Festival Student Shorts Award Announced
The 12th Shanghai International Film Festival Student Shorts Award was announced on 21 June in Shanghai Wanda International Camera. British Council Film Department selected 10 shorts for this competition, two of which were stand out from over 600 works and selected for the final round competition. Hyebin Lee’s Cherry On the Cake received Best Animation and Sally Pearce’s Elephants received Best Creative Idea from final five awards competition. Please click here to read more.

2 Scottish Cinema of Dreams in China
The first Scottish Film Festival in China featured 12 Scottish films at the China Film Archive and the Beijing Film Academy. Each screening was introduced in person by producer Mark Cousins and Oscar winner Tilda Swinton. Public screenings were held from 20-23 March at the China Film Archive, which was transformed into a “movie forest” to add a uniquely Scottish flavour to the cinema-goer’s experience. 3. Best of British Animation Awards Vol 7 Screening
British Council proudly presents the best of the British Animation Awards Vol 7. The British Animation Awards (BAA) covers all aspects of the UK animation scene, from student work to commercials, children's entertainment, short and experimental art films, music videos, new technologies, script-writing and craftsmanship.
