Sarah Deverall has been Director Chongqing since August 2007.

She started her career with the British Council in Rome in 1997 as an English Language Teacher. Since then she has held numerous overseas posts including Manager of the British Council Teaching Centre in Naples from 1999 to 2002; Examinations Services Manager for East China (2002-2004); and Deputy Director Examinations Services China and Director Examinations for North and Central China (2004-2007).

Prior to joining the British Council Sarah worked as a teacher. She first taught Chemistry, Physics and Biology at a secondary school in Sydney for 4 years. She then became an English language teacher at International House London and International House in Italy (Tuscany and Rome).

Born in London, Sarah grew up in Kent and then Sydney, Australia. She obtained a Bachelor of Science degree and a Diploma of Education at Macquarie University, Sydney. Sarah also holds a Certificate in the Teaching of English as a Foreign Language to Adults (CELTA) and a Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults (DELTA). In 2002, she graduated from the University of Surrey in the UK with a Masters degree in English Language Teaching Management; and in 2004 Sarah completed a UK Chartered Institute of Marketing Diploma.
