Time for a change

Gone are the days when people desired nothing more than job security; nowadays many want adventure and excitement, and changing career, moving to a new location or having a career break is helping them to achieve their dreams.

9 to 5 drudgery…
Office workers in particular are finding their desk jobs stressful and frustrating and want to try something different. Judith, from Warrington, decided to give up her office job and take a three year diploma course in mental health nursing at Manchester University. She says, ‘I wanted to do something where I thought I might make a difference… something more vocational and where I was more involved with people. I am pleased with myself that I had the courage to make the decision to make a big change in my life.’

Some people decide to leave UK cities and towns and move to the countryside or overseas because they want a better quality of life in a safer and cleaner environment. Daniel and Bel moved from London to the mountains of mid-Wales. Daniel continues his occupation as a freelance journalist but has also taken up other interests including falconry and foraging for wild mushrooms. Mark Butler and his family moved to New Zealand where Mark has resumed his police career in the New Zealand Police Force. They enjoy the outdoor life and relative security. (source: BBC News)

Just a break…
Sometimes people just need a short break from their jobs to try something different. Some give up their jobs, some are lucky enough to be offered a sabbatical or unpaid leave by their employer. Either way they come back revitalised and ready to face new challenges. Jo, from West London, took a career break for three months to teach English to primary school children in Vietnam as a volunteer. She says, ‘I always wanted to travel but the opportunity wasn’t there when I was younger. Now, in my 30s, I’ve got a great job and good career that I didn’t want to walk away from on a permanent basis. I’d recommend it to everyone, if they can do it. It opens your mind and feeds your soul…’

So it seems there is no need to get stuck in a rut – there are numerous opportunities for breaking out of the ‘9 to 5’ routine.
