The look this season
The fashion gurus are predicting that this season will be one dominated by military style and English heritage. The look will be varied, from the shiny buttons and practical pockets of the military coat, the flying look of aviator style, to tweed, velvet and Victoriana with its flounces and frills.

However, coats and other necessities such as boots are costly. Not everyone buys them to fit in with the fashion season.

We asked a selection of ‘real’ people what they will be wearing this season.

‘Cost is a major factor. I can’t afford a new coat every year so I will be wearing my cream cord coat which is white and fluffy inside. I’ve had it for two years.’ Clair, a web programmer from Birmingham.

Extreme retro
Ijoma, an office worker from London bought her coat from Principles last Christmas. ‘It is a timeless classic, long and black and made from wool. My boots are second hand. They are made from strips of leather and are a 60s design. I like them because they are different from anything you see in the shops.’

‘I have just bought my Autumn jacket from Primark. It is short, almost shrug style, very tailored and denim. When it gets cooler I will be buying a full length Victorian inspired coat with full shoulders.’ Amalie, a musician from Harpenden.

‘I have just bought one in the Top Shop sale but it is not this year’s design. It is long, green with ¾ length sleeves and is a 60s design. I have lots of coats but I don’t necessarily buy the current year’s fashion. One of my favourites is a long fitted tartan coat which I bought second-hand.’ Pilar, a teacher from Sheffield.

Military men
The military look extends into men’s fashion as does the bomber style jacket for the more casual look.

Mark from Clitheroe has just finished university so he cannot afford a new coat. ‘I wear a long grey coat with a furry hood. My main priority is that it keeps me warm. I also like hats particularly with long tassly bits.’

Tom, an IT worker from Newcastle, owns two coats. He wears a suit jacket for smart occasions and his fleece jacket for general wear. He is interested in what is in the shops but buying a new coat is not top of his list of things to do!
